Dentist here. Just read the newest IDA journal. Have some bad news.
So we all know that dental treatments are VAT exempt right? Yes. But it’s not so simple anymore.
Apparently, Revenue Commission is planning to introduce VAT for dental associate – principal work relationship.
What does it mean? Well, essentially that an employer / practice owner / principal dentist will need to pay VAT for any income he / she receives from associates. Like me.
What does it mean for you as a patient?
– Higher prices, up to standard 23% to bear the extra cost for associates
– Or lower fee for associates, which can mean: associates dumping their practices to start their own practices / emigrating for work / reducing treatment quality / etc
Nothing great about this ridiculous Revenue decision or VAT bs.
The only thing you can do would be to complain to local TDs. Or get tx elsewhere. Or accept higher cost.
I don’t know when such change would take place. Assuming it is not opposed.
(I may add source later, but I learnt it from Dec 2021 / Jan 2022 issue of Irish Dental Association journal.)

Who needs teeth? FFG strikes again.
The price of dentistry in this country is already retardedly overpriced as it is. The only country I can think of that even comes close to charging the costs here is America. Sure why not add VAT while we are at it. Fuck sake.
Full set of dentures for my 40th birthday it is.
Great news for the North again, nip up to get your drink and get a root canal while you’re at it.
Is it this you’re talking about?

Why not tax churches and take in billions
Great it’s not like dental treatment isn’t already an extortion
I didn’t know that dental treatments are VAT exempt and I’m wincing at the idea of them costing more. I’ve a few fillings to get done that I’ve been putting off because they’re not critical, that might change now that they’re going to cost me much more.
Annual checkup and clean is the best investment you can make. OP will probably tell me every 6 months, but with 4 in the house I’ll stick to annual
Looks like we’re heading up north for drink AND dental now lads
Why is dental care an aspect of health care that seems to be a luxury?
Can you imagine charging VAT on mental health services or something similar
You’d almost think there wasn’t a cost of living crisis going on 😂
Thanks for the heads up.
I will have shitty forever now it seems 😭
Fab, haven’t seen a dentist since 2015 due to the cost of even just a cleaning. Guess I’ll continue to ignore that aspect of my health as though having teeth is a luxury
Wait. If the dentist is VAT registered they will be able to reclaim any VAT paid to the associates, and since dental work is exempt they won’t have to charge VAT to customers. So it should make no difference at all.
Or what am I missing?
Fucking dentists in this country are charging exorbitant prices compared to mainland Europe, and now it’s all going to go up even more… Brilliant…
Why tf are dentists so expensive in Ireland, like what the actual fuck? How can a root canal with all the bullshit fillings and X-rays cost €700 euro ? I get my stuff done in Riga and a root canal will cost you 100 quid X-ray and fillings and all the other stuff included. You can get a whole mouth done there for the price of one root canal in Ireland. And now it’s getting more expensive, it’s horrible is all I can say.
The supply of staff has always been a VATable activity. The provision of medical services (including dentistry) is VAT exempt. This isn’t new. It’s been in the VAT act since it became law. Doctors have been in the courts lately arguing the supply of staff/ medical services thing for years. Looks like the dentist might be preparing for the worst
They tax the pound of butter, they tax the ha’penny bun,
But still with all their taxes they can’t beat the bleeding hun.
Can somebody explain what an associate is in this context? If I go to my dentist who is the associate in this case?
Presume it’s because there’s been a huge trend in dental care lately , cheeky chief collector tryna get that commission back through austerity.
I’m pencilled in on getting a lot of dental work done over the next year or so.looks like I’ll he heading abroad for that so,it was already going to cost me around 3k here.
My girlfriend and I are saving to get her teeth fixed, wisdom teeth removed and braces. It was already too much without a big loan.
This will honestly just make it impossible…
I saw something a few days where the VAT was separate to the price and I thought what way are things going now?
Sorry to say, but dental holiday trips gonna go up a lot, because its just cheaper already that way. This is just gonna make more people go outside the country and everyone gonna lose that money because of this move by the gov.
More. Fucking. Taxes.
Can you explain then why dental is so ridiculously expensive as it is if you werent even charging VAT…..?!
Dental prices, health insurance, medical waiting lists, housing costs, rent, fuel excises, electricity, car and moto insurance costs, grocery shortages and costs…..
Government might as well charge us for the privelage of being fucked by them so well.
The government really are intent on making Ireland a completely unaffordable place to live for the average person.
All medical care should be vat exempt
Most dental services, including fillings, also cannot be claimed back as health expenses in your tax returns which has always baffled me. Getting a filling is not a fucking luxury. I can claim expenses, however, for trips to the accunpuncturist (not shitting on this as a profession, just highlighting how ridiculous this is)
