   French President Emmanuel Macron said Europe can no longer rely on the US for its security needs and must build its own credible defense.

   In a speech setting out his vision for Europe, six weeks ahead of European Parliament elections, Macron said the continent may need to produce its own anti-missile shield, long-range surface missiles and other items to build a sufficiently robust defense.

   “Europe must defend what’s important for her, with allies or alone,” he said.

2. We’re sovereign f***ing nations with a lot of wealth and technology. We should have always been providing our own security instead of depending on the US.

3. Macron has been very pro-Ukraine, anti-Russia anti-Putin lately and I’m here for it.

4. He’s not wrong. EU should be primarily relying on their own for security with their larger ally, the US, bolstering and supporting that security.

   France boast as a force projection capable country and can’t produce enough to stand high intensity conflict for more than a few days.

   We have an industry to rebuild from the ground up.

10. Is this the guy who was completely outmaneuvered by Putin in Africa, while Russia seemingly had one hand tied behind its back due to being preoccupied in a war? What excuse is there for a country like France not being able to provide Ukraine with more ammunition after two years of war? How is it that a large country like France is being outspent re Ukraine by smaller countries like Denmark and the Netherlands? Why deliver these grand speeches when it’s long past time to stand out through action?

30. Correct, the US is unreliable because of their political chaos and will lose money, influence, and power globally as a result. Hopefully the EU can gradually step up as the US stumbles down, because China is putting on its climbing shoes.

31. He’s forgetting that they’ve already opened themselves up domestically so much. And I don’t think European people are as enthused about their military. I’d be shocked if there is an actual shift without a direct attack on a buffer state.

32. Everyone loves to hate the US . Let’s just admit that . We have problems here don’t get me wrong , but even with the orange guy as president no one was lining up to leave and last I checked people trying to immigrate here didn’t slow down . So yes we have shitty benefits and work long hours, but we also make more money than most people in other countries could ever imagine . After a long hard 40 hr work week feels good to drive home in your luxury car to your suburban mansion and sleep on a mattress that is worth a small fortune in neighboring countries . I’m being over the top but my point is maybe “you hate because you ain’t us”

    Agree other countries should build up their militaries by the way . Will be looking to see how that impacts your country dynamics when all of the additional money needs to be redirected to military spending .

34. Wake me up when they actually decide to do something about it. Next time there is a military budget or project everyone will be trying to either lead it or kill it if they can’t lead it. In the end petty short sighted “self interest” will be sabotaging EU defense well into the 2030s

37. The fact that USA, Canada, UK, and turkey make up more then half of NATO’s spending and none of them are part of the eu should tell you just how bad the EU’s military power is.

39. He’s not wrong. American politics is volatile now. Has been for years. While it would be awesome if no one had to spend a dime on military, that’s not the reality we live in. The EU needs to be as powerful as the US.
