If it isn’t already known — pundits have HUGE biases with their former teams so this really shouldn’t surprise anyone. It’s just poor punditry.
Neville said a couple months ago Man Utd would sneak into a UCL spot as well.

Liverpool probably have overperformed but nobody gave Arsenal that grace last season when they too probably overperformed
Liverpool crumbled when Everton had their number, no plan b and no fight
I know he can’t cuss on TV but let’s be honest, he should’ve just said “they’ve been shit since that FA cup loss.” We have been doing one of the slowest build ups that we’ve done in years and when we did get through, we either miss completely or shoot right at the goalie. There were times where we seemed scared to shoot too
You could argue they’ve both overperformed and underperformed at the same time. It’s a lot of FUN to watch every week – trust me
People got excited because the” Liverpool winning the league in Klopps last season” narrative was so good. But if you look at their team its impressive how well they’ve done.
Feels very much like 13/14.
At the start of the season if CL qualification and a cup was offered I’d have bitten your hand off.
Then by the end you’re gutted to not end up winning the whole thing.
I think when you look at the narrative surrounding us when we missed out on Caicedo/Lavia/Bellingham and ended up with Endo as the starter. I think it’s very easy to say we’ve outperformed those expectations.
Probably also helped by the fact that I expected Newcastle to be a lot more competitive this season than they have been, I know Villa have been a surprise but I was expecting a much tougher fight for top 4.
Carragher changes his tune about Liverpool SO much whenever anything goes wrong it’s hilarious.
He’s just making excuses, if this was city, or Arsenal or any other club in this situation he would be WAY more critical.
I am so BORED of former players doing punditry about the clubs they used to play for.
I wish sky/TNT would have a rule that at least for commentary that any Co commentator has to have NOT played for either team in the game. (Unless it’s Ally Mccoist because what a man)
Going into the season, top 4 was the goal with a brand new midfield and then suddenly they’re in title race.
They over performed preseason expectations, but haven’t quite lived up to mid season expectations.
Very unlucky with injuries, especially compared to arsenal who haven’t missed any real key pieces all year
Could just see Liverpool have been running out of steam in their final few weeks – I think it probably softens the blow knowing this has been coming, rather than it being a collapse out the blue.
It’s funny because people will shit all over them but ultimately Klopp walks away with a trophy in his final year and they’ve had a decent year in the league irrespective of where they finish from here.
Considering they’ve played kids for loads of this season I think they’ve done fine.
Bad time for them to hit poor form, unfortunately for them.
That said, stranger things have happened so we’ll see where things go from here.
My money’s on City but it’s not done yet.
I wish sky would replace Carragher…his accent is irritating…and he was a painfully limited defender (played like a robot, and couldn’t pass either) who had a good 75 minutes in a CL Final ?
Liverpool PL stats 508 games 3 (three) goals 7 own goals! He spat in someone’s face …but Sky decided to keep him on the bill
Absolutely, I saw this live and thought the same thing.
Collapsed when it comes to Arsenal vs Over performed for Liverpool!! And Liverpool have the spine from the title winning, CL winning teams!
He’s underwhelming as an analyst. And he really hates Arsenal and Arteta, salty that we’re doing it right.
Lmfaoooo protecting Liverpool again shameless
How is he wrong about this? We finished 5th last year and that was only with a pretty impressive late rally. I would argue we’re far and away the third best team in the league in both directions: quite a bit less consistent than Arsenal and City even though we can go toe to toe with them on our day, but definitely better than Villa (who we dominated at Anfield) and Tottenham (who we only lost to because of a series of fluke terrible refereeing decisions, and then barely at that. And we’ve had terrible injury luck, requiring us to overplay certain players and bring other players in after long layoffs, requiring difficult integration. And our manager’s leaving, throwing a pall over the whole thing. So yeah, I’d say we’ve overperformed by even contending for the title up to this point. I think if these losses had been spaced out throughout the season and not concentrated in this last month it would probably feel less awful, since we’d have settled for a respectable third place by now. Instead it feels a little like we bottled it, but we didn’t – we just weren’t good enough to win the league.
You can’t have it both ways. You can’t be all cocky and chatting shit when you’re top of the league and then expect sympathy when your season falls apart.
Simple rule. No Kate, Thierry and Big Meeks, Carragher has 50% chance of saying something sensible and that 50% is usually still partially wrong lol
Everyone roasting Carra but not once this season has he had Liverpool as the favourites. Every single time he’s been asked who are your favourites to win the league he’s always said city …. sad people in the comments just always looking for an excuse. If you want to slag off Carra he’s said and done many embarrassing things you can hop on but this is not one them
The way I see it. At the start of the season if you had offered any level minded Liverpool fan the carabao cup and top 4. They would have most likely have took it.
So In terms of last season vs this season. Then Carragher is right.
However. The wheels well and truly fell off. A lot of players should be looking in the mirror and thinking about wtf they were playing at.
Ergo before the UTD cup match you would have been laughed at for suggesting a cup and top 4 is a good season.
Now. It’s a good season 😂
Also Nunez is for sale. Takers?

Some revisionist history going on in here. This is just one of many threads predicting that Liverpool would be the most likely to challenge city this year.
