Hello,
I’m 33 years old and I’ve worked in Switzerland for the past 6 years. I don’t spend most of my money and I was able to spare a consequent sum. Now, I’m at a point in my life where I’d like to take time for myself and prepare my future. In short, I’d like to quit my day-to-day 40h/week job and use that free time. But as you may know, Switzerland is very expensive to live in. Hence the idea to move to Portugal for a year and “work” for myself (without any revenue!) while living modestly. I would regularly come back to Switzerland, a week at a time, in order to visit my girlfriend, family and friends.
One of the biggest expense I currently have (aside from rent) is healthcare, at 220 CHF/month for the cheapest plan. I read that Portugal provides free healthcare for Portuguese residents. But it is not clear to me precisely what a resident is.
Visas are not clear to me either: [1] states that I can request a “Fixed Residency” visa for the purpose of “living on my own income”. However, it “allow two entries and is valid for a period of 4 months”. Does that mean that I cannot freely return to Switzerland (e.g. to spend a week with my family/girlfriend here and there)? Would this allow me to benefit from the public healthcare system that you have?
[2] mentions “If you are an EU/EEA/Switzerland citizen and intend to stay in Portugal for a period exceeding three months, please apply for your REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE FOR EU/EEA/SWITZERLAND CITIZEN”. It isn’t clear to me if I can benefit from the (free?) Portuguese public healthcare system with a “registration certificate”, whatever that is?
I also found [3], but I don’t know which green box applies to my situation.
As you can see, I’m quite lost regarding the different types of visa and the possibility of getting public healthcare (or not). Note that I will not earn a dime during that time. I will live on my savings.
Any help will be appreciated! Greetings to you all!

I would ask a lawyer specialized in immigration, I’m sure you can find many. I personally wouldn’t trust reddit for these matters.
just what we needed
another rich leach to live off portugal for pennies of his paycheck
soo you literally coming here to retire early lol, you are causing issues in portugal, especially in the housing market
Let me get this straight, you want to move here and don’t want to pay for healthcare in the mean time every other Portuguese citizen and residents pay for the social security and taxes for you?
Épico.
> Swiss (EU) citizen wants to ~~live~~ have the Portuguese people pay for his needs ~1 year without working in Portugal
You’ll need around 1 month of a swiss wage to live in Portugal for a year.
