Did the US betray France, or is outrage over a submarine deal simply sour grapes?

  1. Oh god, not this again.

We get it, the French are upset over the British doing a number on them.

  2. France: ‘We will not join any U.S.-led anti-China alliance’

    Australia: *Joins U.S.-led anti-China alliance*

    France: *Shocked Pikachu face*

  3. It’s just the ordinary hubris of empires that disregards the interests of vassal states.

The US has again and again shown this, for example, in Afghanistan, where Nato members were forced to support a hopeless US war, just to be left in the lurch when the US, without consulting its allies, simply withdrew.

  4. Very disappointed by The Hill.

Did Australia have an open international call for tender for conventional submarines? Yes.
Many countries tended their offers for conventional submarines, France got selected, the contract got sign.

Did Autralia change their mind and now wanted nuclear subs? Yes. As is the prerogative of every client.

Did Australia have an open international call for tender for nuclear submarines? NO.
“Hopefully, all will compete fairly, avoiding illicit practices but competing vigorously,” which France wasn’t offer the chance to do. There was no competition. Australia got played into signing a blank check in exchange for an opportunity to stick it to the frogs.

Plus, Australia has 5 years worth of technical confidential information shared by France on their subs. If you were France, what worth would you give their word that they wont share it with their new partners? (this explain exactly: 1-why they were no open call for tender for the nuclear subs, and no early warning to the French, which would have given them time to secure their data; 2-the betrayal felt by France over something that goes beyond a couple billion contract)

  5. Alliances mean nothing when money is on the table. As a french it was disrespectful from australia to withdraw at the last minute but business is business and we are really not that close to this country
