Arda Güler had an interview with a Turkish journalist (Candaş Tolga Işık). In the interview that will be published tomorrow, Arda says that everyone in the team calls him "big brother". Arda, who says that even Modric calls him big brother, says that he is surprised by this situation. Arda says that Alaba grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of Turkish people, so he knows a little Turkish, and that Alaba is a fan of Galatasaray and he is a fan of Fenerbahçe, and they joke about it from time to time.


Arda Güler: Everybody saying me “abi” (big brother) at the team. Even Modric. Alaba is Gala, i am Fener fan. We are joking about it from time to time. (The interview will be published tomorrow.)

  3. I’ve got you fams, I’ll try my best to translate;

    Some stuff to note; as some of you might have caught on, Turkish has different words for big and little brother (and sister). “Abi” (derived from Ağabey) is the default adjective you call out to someone that’s older than you. It’s a sign of respect, and while it’s slang you will hear it from businessmen to successful academics. It’s ingrained and very folksy. It’s the one word where everyone will leave their background behind them and just say “abi” while on a cruise on a 50m USD yatch ot something.

    With that out of the way;

    * Arda: They call me “abi” (big brother in Turkish)
    * Candaş: They call you “abi”?? (Surprised)
    * Arda: They call me abi here
    * Candaş: Everyone?
    * Arda: Everyone, abi abi abi abi. I’m surprised; when Modric calls me abi I’m like… (he kind of slumps inside of himself there lol)
    * Arda: It’s an interesting situation to be in. They don’t know what “abi” means of course (says in an explaining way)
    * Candaş: You shot a video with Alaba recently?
    * VID Alaba: Dinner tonight?
    * VID Arda: Yes?
    * VID Alaba: Ok
    * VID Arda: Ok
    * VID Alaba: Ok kardeşim (Little brother – Alaba is clearly familiar with the Abi / Kardeş thing)
    * Arda: Alaba has grown up in a district with a lot of Turks in Austria, he’s actually a fan of Galatasaray and he mentions it to me from time to time. He jokes around with me, says you’re a Fenerbahçe fan, I’m a Galatasaray fan (note: biggest rivalry in Turkey. Akin to Madrid vs Barca).
    * Candaş: If you were describing that goal how would you describe it? (He’s talking about his first goal)
    * Arda: You tell it “abi”, I can’t tell it (laughing etc)
    * Arda: I don’t know how to describe it “abi”, it was grea–
    * Candaş: If you replayed it right now would you still dribble past the keeper?
    * Arda: Yea I’d still dribble it past him
    * Candaş: Sing a little
    * Arda: “Abi” don’t, please don’t do this to me “abi”, don’t “abi” (laughing etc)
    * Arda: Don’t burn us “abi” (slang way of saying it would be a self burn if I sang)
    * Arda: (The Spanish part): Hello Madritistas, thank you for the love you’ve shown me
