She became acting President following the death of David Sassoli on 11th January.
I honestly know little about Metsola’s politics, apart from her comments of rule of law in Malta following the Muscat crisis in 2019 and that famous photo of [her refusing to shake Joseph Muscat’s hand](https://lovinmalta.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Screenshot-2019-12-03-at-15.03.01.png).
Still though, it’s nice to see that a Maltese politician was able to gain an important role on the world stage.

I too know little about her politics other than her stance on abortion, which seemed to come up a lot in her post election questions. Seems strange that someone with such archaic views on it got elected in 2022 but let’s see how she does.
I find her pretty vacuous and inconsistent as a politician, but it’s still an outstanding achievement for her, so she deserves the plaudits.
