What are the new post-Brexit border controls starting on April 30? • FRANCE 24 English

Benedict tell us then a little bit more
about what this uh change could mean and
why it could be a real
problem well it’s certainly uh the start
of a new post brexit era so we’ve got
from today the 30th of April these new
stronger checks physical checks that are
coming into Force as you said for some
animal and plant products arriving into
the UK from uh the EU now these custom
checks uh which are part of this new
post brexit world and and arrangement as
you say almost 8 years after that uh
Infamous now brexit uh vote here in the
UK they will finally start to be carried
out but our understanding is that these
changes have been delayed five times uh
that they’re going to be implemented uh
not very in a very strict and hard way
from the beginning uh some importers
will also face fees so that of course is
worrying them however products coming
from Ireland we understand will for now
be exempt uh by contrast of course one
has to underline that checks have been
applied to exporters already now for 3
years uh so that’s um a significant
difference uh and of course there’s been
this fear from uh particularly small and
uh medium-sized companies uh that this
will hurt them exponentially far more so
uh we will see what the reality is uh
but perhaps that will be a slow newer
reality that we will that we will see so
what the authorities here says that
they’re going to implement it in a
sensible and controlled way they say
their long-term objective is to inspect
each shipment that comes into the
country to limit that risk of disease
also to comply of course with uh global
trading rules professional organizations
say that they expect very low levels
therefore of checks from the beginning
uh but it’s the businesses and holers
that are actually really worried that
this could Supply cause supply shortages
disruption in the supply chain and also
that it will increase costs for
companies and therefore also for the
consumers so just to give you a quick
idea an importer will have to pay up to
£45 that’s
$182 each time it takes delivery of
goods arriving uh at the ports of for
example of uh DOA and folston where the
great majority of goods come in uh
across boats um such companies face
paying an extra
$375 in English money that’s £300 per
shipment of goods when the cost of
certificates is added and that says the
government uh could means the UK could
face a total additional cost of
330 million so that is uh nothing to uh
really it’s not a modest sum and of
course there there is worry how this is
going to play out quite ramifications as
you were implying yeah bened he comes of
course as well as the ruling Pro brexit
conservative party is facing a general
election there in theuk UK in the next
12 months if this causes renewed
problems it’s not going to help what a
lot of people are saying there are
already thin
chances well certainly thin chances uh
because according to a recent poll the
conservative party is indeed on course
to suffer a general election Wipeout
worse than that of
1997 uh of course where labor came in uh
on a landslide uh and we think if the
polls are right that would mean whenever
the general election comes we’ll come on
to that uh that the labor party led by
sakir stama could secure a
154 seat majority now this UGA survey of
survey of nearly 19,000 people predicts
that Rishi sunak will suffer the tor’s
worst general election result on record
and that the labor party will win a
majority almost twice of the size of
boce Johnson’s back in 2019 that that
had been considered at the time a a
Triumph anyway experts think the
direction will be held in the Autumn uh
the betting is uh on the second week of
November but let’s be careful Rishi
sunak did not rule out a July election
all he said is it will be in the second
half of the Year funny that July is in
the second half of the Year never know
we should wait and see benedict on
standby exactly Benedict certainly is on
standby thanks very much Benedict corus
