Thats ok. Rishi has promised to give them tens of billions of pounds of extra funding up to 2030, so whats losing a billion here or there.
> 2014/15: £284.22 million
I’m sure they don’t worry too much about the odd pen, but who slipped a couple of Typhoons into their pocket on a Friday afternoon.
Not terrible in fairness for that timespan considering the £500B odd I expect has been spent – that’d be 0.2%.
I did my apprenticeship with the MOD. Part of which meant I had to go to every department for some time between 2 weeks and 2 months.
I spent 2 weeks in the tool stores. The Storemen were 2 older guys (probably around mid 50’s) that hated each other. It was weird, they’d sit in the same room for 8 hours a day and barely say a word to each other. From time to time somebody would come into the office, talk to one or the other of these guys for a few minutes – never both, beyond maybe a “hi” – and then disappear again.
After a couple of days, one of them took me aside and said “Hey Gnorty, if you need any tools for home, come and see me. I’ll sell them to you cheap, and if it’s not in stores already, I’ll order it”.
I was pretty shocked tbh, there was definitely scope for a LOT of customers, and he was potentially making comfortably more doing that than legitimate earnings. I did not have any idea how many people were buying from him, but it was obvious it could have been quite a lot of people.
Then., a few days later, the other old fucker took me aside and had pretty much the same conversation.
All those people coming in were buying stolen MOD issue tools at a huge discount from the 2 crooks whose job was to keep this stuff safe.
1 Billion in losses does not surprise me ONE BIT
£70m/year, for a department that has a budget of £30-40bn isn’t the terrible gotcha people think it is.
It’s a rounding error. – it’s much like someone on £30k (after tax), misplacing £70 a year.
