   Which means, the performance of the Russian military is, satisfyingly and luckily, a deeply humiliating and demoralizing failure.

It's the European nations (NOT the USA) who have had THEIR economies damaged and who must get THEIR oil, natural gas etc from other than Russian suppliers. US export of natural gas is booming, particularly due to inflated prices to Europeans who no longer have a Nord Stream 1 or 2 to turn to. Military equipment purchases and contracts totally billions are being made between EU nations and the US "military industrial complex". The money that the US is supposed spending on Ukraine or "aid" as it is called, includes long term loans and other financial trickery that is in reality filling the coffers of US industries. So no, it's not the west who is coming off second best. It's Europe. The US is having a win/win out of this….. The EU as an economic competitor of the USA is going backwards. Russia as an economic competitor is being squeezed. And corporate USA smiles behind closed doors.
