Myanmar: Can the opposition overthrow the government? | DW News
resistance fighters in Myanmar have been
winning battles against the ruling
military hun in clashes across the
country leading many to believe that the
government could be at risk of
collapsing but last week the military
said it had recaptured the town of
mayawati on myanmar’s eastern border
with Thailand sparking concerns the
conflict could escalate DW interviewed
the Foreign Affairs representative of
the national Unity government of Myanmar
as the country’s I government in
Exile it’s one of the world’s most
violent ongoing
conflicts since the 2021 military GP at
least 50,000 people have been killed in
Myanmar now 3 years into a civil war
there are no signs of it
abating in early April the town mayaadi
an important Transit point for the flow
of goods between Thailand and Myanmar
fell under the control of a Rebel ethnic
minority group but as of late April
mayaadi was back under the hunas control
the situation remains volatile the
foreign minister of myanmar’s opposition
group The National Unity government in
an interview with DW accused the
military hun of targeting civilians in
the
battle they are losing they are
desperate so that is fine they don’t
even able to to to discriminate whether
it is civilian or military Target they
are definitely intentionally targeted to
the civilian population because they are
desperate and they are losing the
situation in Myanmar remains enormously
complex with resistance groups opposed
to the Hun at times also fighting each
other elsewhere there’s particular
concern for the rohinga people in
myanmar’s Northern rakine
State the military is the one who
creating the problem who committed crime
against humanity and who creating the
hate and dividing the community so they
are also using that kind of tactic uh in
Ran States they also using uh rohinga as
like a human shield rohinga Muslims have
been at the center of a humanitarian
crisis with some 700,000 forced to flee
to Bangladesh after a brutal 2017
Crackdown by the
military I also appreciate that uh
Europe European Union round of s to the
military Hunter which is a really good
uh and economic and diplomatic pressure
for the military Hunter and then but at
the same time we also need uh
humanitarian assistance uh for those who
are suffering on the ground because as
we mentioned that there are more and
more refugees uh uh are are in creating
because of the military Hunter the 2017
military Crackdown is now subject of a
genocide investigation at at the
international court of
justice let’s get more on this story now
from Dr Yang he Lee in Soul South Korea
she’s a founding member of the special
advisory Council for Myanmar which
Advocates on behalf of the country’s
Democratic movement thanks for being
with us Professor tell us about the
situation on the ground in Myanmar do
you know who actually has the upper hand
in the conflict the military hun or the
resistance
forces well I I heard your interview
with uh doar who’s not just a member of
the opposition she is the foreign
minister of the national Unity
government as she said the Hun is losing
and we have done a research in
2022 uh about the effective control of
myar and have found really surprising
results and even Min on L said that uh
theun only exercises about 30% of
control but but since the time that we
did the report we’re doing a followup
and we found uh even more surprising
results not only did the Hun lose most
of its International borders to China
Thailand and um India uh it has lost
some more areas that’s facing closer to
the heartland of Myanmar so the
effective control is not not just
territorial control it’s the nature of
how one can govern a Township or a state
the the Hun has not been able to govern
for a while and so they’re now resorting
to more barbaric uh atrocities against
the civilian population of Myanmar now
the violence in Myanmar is having a huge
impact on civilians are they able to
access humanitarian assistance when
needed no because the international
government most of the international
government uh International Community is
channeling through the Hun which they
should not be channeling through Huna
through the hun because it would only
reach the people that are under the Hun
control mostly their military and their
family uh most of the territory is now
under the
ethnic revolutionary forces they’re no
longer regarded as the rebel groups
anymore there’s been less fighting
between the ethnic armed groups now
because they have now joined hands and
in alignment with the national Unity
government for the aspiration uh uh
fulfilling the aspiration of the people
of myamar for a free Democratic uh
Federal uh MMA so the the most need
needed Aid is not reaching the people in
dire need what the International
Community must do is to channel these uh
assistants cross border through the
ethnic or networks they’ve been doing
this for decades and they have the
knowhow they have the skills they have
the the connections and if the a goes
through the uh borders it can even get
channeled into Central myar and in to
Yang Gan Dr Yang he Lee thank you very
much for your uh insights there that was
uh Dr leeam the special advisor Council
for
Myanmar now let’s get uh more on the
situation in myamar from the journalist
Tintin Neo she is the managing director
of Burma News International and joins us
now from Bangkok Tintin do you think the
pro-democracy groups and the resistance
forces can actually overthrow the
government in Myanmar
it is uh difficult to say exactly
however starting from last year October
27 after the the three uh Brotherhood
Alliance uh launched the military
offensive we can see that it is really
uh we can see some kind of hope that we
can overthrow the military Haunter
because like after that uh more than 300
uh military uh key post and also Al like
um that their important places has been
taken by the resistant groups and also
like uh from the first of the military
CP until now it’s more than 6,000
military personer has been captured by
the resistant groups and also we can see
that uh from different kinds of events
the military personnels of the uh
military Hunter they are losing uh their
willingness to fight against the
resistant groups also they are
emotionally uh affected from all the
like uh all the killing and all the like
uh life have been giving uh life have
been uh losing during the fighting so we
can we see that these are quite like a
impactful when it come to uh throwing
over uh throwing the the military Haun
at the same times like um uh we can see
that from the alliance uh cooperator
attack uh we can see when we work
together we can win and we can succeed
so the only thing is like all the
resistant groups have to work together
uh and then also like fight against the
military Hunter so this may show that we
can uh we can uh definitely uh overthrow
the military hun yeah now how credible
are the opposition’s allegations that
the military Hunter targets
civilians that is uh the when this come
to like a responses from the military
Hunter it was very crucial and very like
uh how they say um risky for the
civilian because they normally use like
a air strike and also artillery sharing
that that is also very much targeted to
the uh civilian infrastructure and also
Villages and not just doing shelling and
also bombing but also burning Villages
houses and like that so uh these are how
to say uh one of the Cru cruess way of
responding against the coordinated
attack uh of operated by the resistant
groups so um that’s why even even within
a month like in April alone uh it it’s
already created about like a 15,000 idps
now that the idps population reached to
More Than 3 million so that is really uh
how you say um um Dreadful kind of like
a impact out of the um uh the the boming
and also the burning and also artillery
shelling uh conducted by the military
Hunter the journalist T Neil the
managing director of Burma News
International thank you very
much thank you

Even the resistance fighters succeeded, it will never be a peace at Myanmar. History had proven. Just look at Syria, Iraq and the rest. Too many resistance fighters group and war lord in Myanmar.
မြန်မာမှာ ပြည်မှာ ပြန်လာပြော ခွေးမ ဇင်မာကန်း
Will all the different ethnic armies agree to lay down their arms and form a democratic government with the National League for Democracy (NLD)?
Typical Southeast Asian moments…
Imagine if only Myanmar had a bundle of oil like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, or Iran, they might already be 'free' now
Other stupids media that talking crazy that have nothing to do with the conflict.
resistance fighters is what they are, well done changing it from rebels, even if rebels is not a negative word in itself it sounds more accurate

What about Paris May Day demonstration… ? No coverage.

I love DW. They're not afraid of having a comments section.
UN Special Envoy (Noeleen Heyzer) Report still stands truly to date as:-
1. Public has lost (Complete) Trust in the junta/SAC/National Army; (Envoy's Statement)
2. Junta/SAC is manipulating (with whatsoever means it gets; ("Continuing" commit atrocities, human rights violations etc.) to stay in Power no matter what. (Envoy's Statement) Ref. UN – Mar 2023.
Common people suffer the most
It's a literal rebel alliance. Palpatine should have finished the Death Star before dissolving the Senate.
Having a fledgling democracy next to China's autocracy was too volatile. So China aided the junta in overthrowing Myanmar's government.
Since the fighters have channels to receive aid (Myanmar has very long, porous borders), some 'entity' should buy and donate a large cache of Russian weapons.
A 'gift' to the junta and president Xi
Its part of India 😂
Last time I commented how I feel I got in trouble for hate speech so: hiss boo tatmadaw, poke you in the eye!
The military didn’t recapture the town. The town was divided by 3 forces. The pro democracy alliance, warlord KNA and the military. Right now the military reinforcement are be blocked my the pro democracy allies.
The situation is gonna get messy before it gets better 🤨
This depends on whether the military government continues to support telecommunications fraud and drugs.
wait!!! @ 4:09 this lady mentioning the junta losing its border to China & Thailand? really?? specially Thailand, what kind of talk she's having.
Offcourse with the help of west😊
Burma 🇲🇲 Myanmar 🇲🇲. Pray for the peace of this country. Pray for the welfare the city we live in.
I agree with with doctor Yan h l. She makes a good points.
Where they get the money and arm support and delivery?
Those rebels are the cause of the problems…
Rusia and china are close ties with myanmar jaunta and russian military pilot were took part with jaunta militries to assault rebel area of burma
In burma 90% of the population are anti goverment .also the day military cope took place from that time to now anti goverment activist has killed many junta authorities accross the nation and junta oppsition rebble killed many junta militries
There was no rule book for this kind of situation. Will they be able to make it happen?
Not recapture. The KNU & KNLA decide not to hold what they have gained earlier. They let it go to the powerful pro Military groups in town.
This junta is totally criminal and babaric myanma people have been suffring ever acine british granted interpendent and the past series of burmese administration were criminal and babaric
Million of people facing hard life in burma .present junta and series of administration were autocratic regime
Entire military take bribe as well as all goverment employee
Interesting media facts.
Junta forces.
1. Government budget = US$10 billion (defence $2.5 billion)
2. Armed forces = 150,000 active, 20,000 reserves.
3. Police force = 75,000 active
4. Territory control = 5 of 6 districts, mainly the most populous Valley plains, numbering 35 million. (The 8 states are in rebellion with 9 major rebel armies).
5.Gdp = US$68 billion.
Rebel forces
1. Control 8 states, 1 division.
2. Combined army = 75,000
3. Combined police force = 7,000 (defectors)
4. Population = 15 million.
5. Rebel government budget = $700 million (local tax & mafia payments from scams, drugs, gambling)
5. Gdp = unreported, probably US$6 billion. (One report states Myanmar illicit trades = US$2.0 billion.
6. Rebel military budget = probably $200 million.
Though only an estimate, the Junta has the upper hand, Major forex are foreign workers (2 million works mostly in Thailand, Malaya & Singapore) remiting $1.7 billion.
Action of police in ASEAN to limit "Illicit trades" could weaken the rebels. We cannot find numbers on google on US, British, EU aid to the Rebel government.
