Sorry for the link.
“A man driving a high-performance Porsche sports car died after clipping an oncoming vehicle and crashing into the side of a house while trying to dodge a pothole, police believe.
The 74-year-old man, from Reigate in Surrey, was pronounced dead at the scene after his 911 997 GT2 – a stripped back version of the iconic sports car designed for driving at race circuits – hit multiple cars and a roadside home on a Sussex road.
A 65-year-old man from Midhurst in Sussex who was driving a white BMW was taken to hospital after incurring ‘serious injuries’ in the smash. Two other vehicles, a black BMW and a white Audi, were also involved.
Police are appealing for information and sources have indicated that one theory relates to a large pothole close to the crash site, which they believe the man may have sought to avoid as he travelled along the road on Monday at 7.50am.”
This is why you take your car to the track to open it up. People need to stop driving like assholes on public roads.
Why does the article seem obsessed by the car brands and makes?
Potholes do seem to be more numerous and serious these days. What a tragic and pointless loss of life.
The article clearly says there is no evidence of speeding at this time. Local residents report speeding on that road happens often, but I don’t think it’s fair to automatically assume the driver was an asshole. Even the police are looking at the potholes as the cause of the accident. Call him an asshole after you’ve found out he was an asshole. Until then have some damn respect.
That’s less the potholes fault and more the dickhead of a driver.
“Man drives into oncoming traffic in order to avoid a piece of road he didn’t want to drive on at the speed he was going rather than any of the plethora of other non life-threatening options available to him. It’s a miracle he didn’t kill anyone else”
The pothole, and the car makes are completely irrelevant.
Going too fast the wasnt he. You must be able to control your vehicle at all times. Its very simple
“One local said: ‘Everybody speeds down this hill. After winding through all the lanes, its frustration.”
Normalization of anti-social driving in the Nation o Motorists.
I actually had someone swerve onto my side of the road earlier today due to potholes on their side. They are a genuine risk to life and the fact our roads are in such a state is just another symptom of our failed government.
74 years old and driving a Porsche GT2 – effectively a road legal race car.
It’s very easy to light up the rear tyres at 30mph in a car like this and lose control.
If that’s a puddle of water just after the corner, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was someone unable to control the car as much as it was ‘*avoiding a pothole*’. I’d be keen to see the report from the police. The Daily Mail has a reputation for some of the patchiest journalism know to the Western world.
Was driving behind a highway maintenance truck that was serving to avoid potholes today. Roads round here are in an awful state, I’ve had to swerve to avoid huge holes, haven’t swerved into ongoing traffic mind you. What a pointless waste of a life
That seems a weirdly intact car for a fatal accident
Pothole avoidance is now a mandatory skill for driving on UK roads
I don’t even drive and I’ve noticed how insane the potholes are nowadays. Shouldn’t be acceptable to cut back on fixing roads.
Very sad indeed – and just very unfortunate.
I’ve had to swerve some huge potholes over the past couple of years and I find myself scanning the road ahead for them now. In a Porsche swerving out too hard at the wrong speed (not necessarily speeding) can cause a spin/ rear end out.
A cyclist near me was killed a few months ago when he front wheel fell into a pot hole and got caught between the cobbles underneath on a dark winters morning. It threw her under a van coming the opposite way.
Absolutely unreadable website but if you persevere that’s a pretty harsh bump you’ll get from the pothole. If he swerved he was paying attention to the road but his instinct got him killed.
What I would like to know is who in what government department will face corporate manslaughter charges for stuff like this?
You can be sure if I was negligent and someone died then I would face jail time. My lack of budget would not be a factor
‘Designed to be driven on race tracks’ ….. shouldn’t it have had a full roll cage installed then, quite an innocuous looking crash for a fatality in a race car. Poor sod.
The condition of the 911 does not look like it would be a fatality. More to be learned.
If his car is low enough clearance the road coulda just fucked it by driving normally too
The amount of people in here id dread to meet driving on the roads is insane, say he hit the raised drain and it caused him to crash would it be reckless driving then? The state of the roads in this country are more expected of kandahar than Kent.
Brave choice to be owning a car like that on our roads
I know its fashionable round here to jerk off over “ToRiEs Bad” but the reality is this is a local council issue.
They spunk money away on shite and allow roads to be unmaintained because we all accept theyre shite so whats the point in spending money fixing something we all expect to be broken.
The head of my local council earns £125k a year. Oh and they get £30 a month phone allowance paid for by the taxpayer. Because heaven forbid someone on a 6 figure salary has to buy a 20 quid phone contract. That phone allowance alone is a pothole a month being fixed.
It extends further than the government, national highways (or whatever bullshit name theyve rebranded to now) are huge offenders for this. Motorway potholes are getting worse.
I reported a slip road near me riddled with dangerous potholes. There were 12 other outstanding reports for this sliproad. So they went and fixed it (badly) and 2 weeks later resurfaced the entire slip road. So the money spent fixing for 2 weeks was wasted. When you look at the wages their staff earn for doing literally nothing, you can see why all their money is spunked away with not much left for repairs.
How many councils have gone bust in the last couple of years and who are we blaming for that?
You’ve also got this huge influx of EV’s which are dodging tax like there’s no tomorrow and id argue they contribute to road damage just as much. A Tesla model 3 weighs half a tonne more than a diesel 3 series and pays £0 tax.
Don’t get me started on busses. How many busses do you see, trundling around with their 13 litre diesel engines, carrying 4 or 5 passengers, weighing in at a good 12 tonnes, going over the same small roads dozens of times a day, 7 days a week.
The entire issue extends to much more than “bad govenment is bad”
A 74 year old in a 911 GT2? That’s a rock hard track car. Way to go grandpa.
He probably swerved to avoid breaking his spine,
I have avoided certians routes to work because of the number of potholes in said road.
If they can’t fix road, I would prefer to have muddy gravel road than tarmac road full of potholes.
Potholes are so dangerous and should be treated as a dangerous hazard.
The Stockholm Syndrome that is rampant in the UK public is sickening. The government and councils have bled this country dry and destroyed all services but people still will give it “ oh he was speeding”.
No wonder everyone laughs at us. We are utterly pathetic
