  1. Amazing to me how Italy and to a lesser degree Greece has been able to escape the fact that they’ve been appeasing Russia just as much as Germany, if not more so. So why is Germany getting almost all the blame?

This type of behaviour has been going on for a long time from both Italian politicians and business elites.

  2. Just another example why businesses should not have strong say in national politics and must be strictly separated from policy making

  3. Although it can go against national interests, they are (powerful) private companies, so they go where there is the chance to do businesses.

The only thing is that the state own partially ENI, so we have to understand if the government is favorable to this meeting.

  4. Traitors?
The same of when Uk and France disrupted north african countries in order to make their economic interest against Italian economic interest and infuence in that area, I guess.
Or the same when France an Germany refused to cooperate in the defence of southern Europe borders for the management of illegal immigration leaving Italy alone?
Or the same when Usa refused to cooperate in defending Italian interest in Libia and Mediterranean sea against Turkish expansion?

These bad Italians are so different from the american, english, french etc. pure souls…

  5. A bit of context: this meeting isn’t just CEOs deciding to meet up with Putin on their own on a whim, it’s organized by the Italo-Russian Chamber of Commerce (which existed since 1965) and was supposed to happen in November but was delayed. Italy and Russia always had business ties since the cold war.

  6. Here in Italy, the propaganda machine is running strong. There’s actually an article on the front page of the Corriere saying that Putin will promise Italy “gas at prices below market value” so I guess they’re spinning this as a good thing.
