    The first newspaper to be entirely published in the Asturian language was published in 1901 in Xixón (Gijón in Spanish) and had as its name ixuxú, taken from the name of this “scream”. The newspaper did not have a long lifespan, unfortunately. It’s worth noting that the 3rd of May was the Día de les Lletres Asturianes, a day to celebrate the seriously endangered Asturian language and advocate for its officiality in Asturias, its home. Asturian speakers were and still are perfectly capable of using Asturian to write, read and do anything else that Spanish speakers can do, if they are given the opportunity.
