Heavy snowfall in Athens, Greece

  1. The Acropolis must be a death trap now. The rock floor is already polished smooth by millions of tourists’ shoes, but with snow on top of it it must be incredibly slippery.

Same with Areiopagos, that was already slippery on a dry summer day 😀

  2. I’m currently sitting at Athens Airport trying to get a flight after my business appointment was canceled.

When i boarded my plane in Düsseldorf yesterday my phone said “light snow” in Athens. When we approached Athens airport we needed to wait 40 minutes for a runway to get cleared. Somehow i ended up on one of the few flights that werent canceled.

So still oblivious to the situation and without much official communication i proceeded to get my rental car. The guys at Sixt threw some snow chains in the car and send me on my merry way. They didnt warn me what was lying ahead.

The roads directly surrounding the Airport were relativly clear but all highways were closed. I followed my GPS to avoid the highways and ended somewhere in a suburb that was completly dark and my car was completly stuck. I started to prepare for a night in the car until around midnight 3 heroes came to my rescue and got me free and gave me some advice.

I retraced my way back to the Airport and after 7 hours, in which i managed about 25km, i was back at the Airport. There i found the only store that was open, the shell gas station at the IKEA. I bought some water and snacks.

The Airport Hotel was full and i didnt want to try my luck again to get to any other hotel, so i settled in for a night in the car.

I changed into dry clothes, let the engine running and didnt freeze to death. Now i’m waiting at the gate for my flight to be announced.

    Fun trip!

  3. I flew out from Athens yesterday. So many cancelled flights, 5 hour delay back to London. The snow on the runway was insane and the turbulence wasn’t ideal.

  4. This happened to me in February 2014 or 2015. I was in the Acropolis with my girlfriend as soon as it opened. The place was practically empty and it started to snow. I don’t use the word magical often but it really was a magical experience. Watching the snow fall, covering the ruins that have been there for centuries and we had the place practically to ourselves. It’s something I’ll never forget.

  5. I was there a half year ago. Loved it. Greece is my favorite country to travel to.

Crazy difference between this picture and the pictures with the fires in summer.
