  3. Mexico is so weird. Tons of foreign travel around that part of Mexico all the time and nothing bad happens. Then you occasionally hear a story like this of people going missing and turning up dead.

    Those were some physically capable dudes, so obviously they crossed paths with people who had guns and nothing but poison in their hearts.

    Their last moments must have been scary as hell. What a nightmare.

  4. Guys it’s been reported that this likely isn’t cartel related, one of the deceased and a woman arrested knew each other and a man arrested is the woman’s husband. Let’s just chill out with the diatribes about México is unsafe for tourists until it all comes out in context.

  5. I’ve been to Mexico many times and have never had even a little trouble, not that there couldn’t be trouble but you keep a low profile and stay in tourist areas. Every time I hear about this, later we find out it’s drugs and that they “somehow” wound up in a rival cartel area.

  7. Isnt going to Mexico (except for like 2 hotels in 2 cities) almost a death sentence?

    I imagine the cartels are just waiting for such occasions to get some ransome money or entertainment by torture

  8. To add some context, I have a coworker that knew one of these guys because they played lacrosse together. He told me that he was ex-military and had some connections with some higher ups within the FBI. These guys were large and fit with military training. It’s possible but I think it’s a far shot that they would not have been at least a little prepared for things to go sideways in Cartel territory. Just my opinion, but I don’t believe it was just some random meth heads that are responsible.

  12. My ex and his brother were on a surfing trip just south of the California border and were approached by Mexican cops. Hauled off to jail and sat in a cell without being told why. Robbed of everything they had on them. When they were released the next day, my ex’s brother ripped open his shoe – turns out he’d sewn cash inside, in the event of an emergency. They made it back to the US and none of us have ever visited Mexico since.
