Why are Germany and France at odds with the Anglosphere over how to handle Russia?

  1. Because they’re closer and will feel more immediate effects of a conflict?

Oh, and something about not wanting another world war.

  2. Its quite simple, it’s because the anglo don’t care if relations with Russia are bad. They have nothing to fear or lose. As long as Moscow influence is only regional.

If anything the bigger the Russian threat look, the bigger the rift in the EU is about the way it should be handled. And this is to their benefit, since this put NATO in a better position and discourage the development of a more political EU.

  3. Because they don’t have Murdoch driven media and know that Russia is barely keeping itself together. It’s economy is only slightly bigger than Spain!

  4. Very good article, spot on.

Edit: why the downvotes? It pretty much correctly captures what is debated in the German news – which is a rare feat in the English news.

  5. The Anglosphere has deeply fallen into mass political histeria since a long time. Antagonising everyone that isn’t exactly like them as an enemy.

  6. because France and Germany are dependent on Russian gas and Russia uses this leverage to divide Europe and weaken it

  7. >”Why are Germany and France at odds with the Anglosphere over how to handle Russia?”

Because the “Anglosphere” has such a good historical precedent of making great geopolitical decisions…Yeah I’ll stick to my German bros who keep a cool head in those situations instead of foaming at the mouth American MIC…

  8. The Anglosphere is much more inclined to play hardball because its relationship with Russia has always been more antagonistic and less cooperative.

  9. Got my newspaper from 2003 out. Top headline:

    >Why are Germany and France at odds with the Anglosphere over how to handle Iraq?

Because those wars work like a charm, right?

  10. One reason I would add is I think it would be the height of ingratitude for French officials to not back Germany publicly, after the Germans were the only one to have our back of all the ‘allies’ during the 2003 Iraq War media frenzy.

It’s the basis of both countries geopolitics that they try to work together. Come hell or high water, you won’t get one onboard without the other.

  11. We’re part of Eurasia, so our interest is in the developement (trade, security, energy etc) of that gigantic piece of land, while Anglos are alone on their islands. If Eurasia gets connected, they will loose any chances of being relevant on the world stage, that’s why they’re are more keen to go to war with Russia or China, because their project of unifying Eurasia through trade threatens their hegemony.
The belt and road initiative is just that.
French and German governement are well aware of that.

  12. Because the “Anglosphere” isn’t anywhere near where war will kick off, if it does start it won’t be Boris sending troops to ruck with putin’s pansies. It will be european troops.

  13. Because of money and gas. There has been a lot of russian wealth invested in german companies in last years and vice versa. Germany’s current energetic security is more and more dependent on coal and gas.

  14. The Anglosphere is extremly consolidated while most of the EU and the remnant part of Europe aren’t. In the Anglosphere, the populace expects at least the perception of a hard stance on Russia and China while the EU has much more diverse opinions. If the perception of strength rings true hardly matters as long people believe it does. Also, in the unconsolidated EU countries (minus France), the isolationist stance is very prevalent. However, each country needs to be analyzed on its own and we can’t just paint all of Europe with the same brush.
