Not surprised. No one wants to helm the ship taking on water. This is like when a party gets hammered at a Westminster election, you don’t want to be the leader taking over immediately, you want to be the one taking over 18 months to 2 years before the next General Election.
Unfortunately, the SNP have fumbled it, and will most likely take a big hit in the GE later this year, and Swinney will take the blame. Anyone with an ounce of competence or desire to lead will wait until after the election and take over, giving themselves time to clean up ahead of the May 2026 Holyrood elections 18 months later.
They’ve given a caretaker a coronation. The real leadership contest will be when Swinney steps down
So what’s the game plan for the SNP now? Swinney is leader and will likely lead them into the GE, but for the Holyrood elections in 2026?
Most people think he’s a caretaker, so after the GE hit will he stand down with Forbes being the almost-certain replacement?
Damn that’s Bald.
So both Scotland and the UK as a whole have had
– One leader who was elected solely by their own party’s membership
– One leader who was appointed unopposed after the previous one was forced to resign.
And for those who think Labour are better, Vaughn Gething has just done the same in Wales.
This is not democracy.
“elected”, BBC?
Will Swinney’s links to Sturgeon/Murrell be a problem for the SNP? He was her deputy for that entire time, I’d imagine there will be lots of questions about what he knew and when
So the SNP’s strategy looking forward is to go with a man who was party leader and achieved nothing – checks notes – *twenty years* ago?!
This is a party that’s been in power too long and needs a good stint in opposition.
