AI deepfake used by Maryland teacher to frame principal as racist and anti-Semitic • FRANCE 24

time now for truth or fake Kath maror by the big board ready to go an interesting story com out of Maryland USA a high school principal framed as a racist with a deep fake recording Catalina tell us more that’s right Mark here is the racist and anti-semitic a fake audio a clip that was created using artificial intelligence or what we call a deep fake where we hear the falsified voice recording of Pikesville High School principal in Maryland Eric isart allegedly making racist remarks about black students and their test scores uh the recording also poorly captures the principal making so sick of the inadequacies disparaging comments about and if I have complaint from one more Jew in this community I’m going to join the other side this audio was disseminated via email to select teachers before circulating on social media in January and following the release of this audio this fake audio recording this principal was placed on leave even though he denied ever participating or doing this recording so this poor gentleman has been the victim of a real setup and I apologize if what we’ve played as an example has offended anybody who has heard it cuz some of the things that were put there into this deep fake recording were very offensive Catalina who was behind then this deep fake recording uh 31-year-old dazen Darion seems to be behind this fake audio recording he is the high school’s athletic director who was arrested last Thursday accused of creating this uh hoax audio and framing his high school principle as racist and anti-semitic uh with the audio recording we just heard uh this man also faces several charges including theft stalking and disruption of school operations uh some of these concerns were actually originally pointed out uh by this High School Professor for example uh using misusing High School funds to pay his roommate so this underlines perhaps the basic motive on behind the creation of this deep fake and following this incident uh there an investigation was conducted by the police as the Baltimore County Police concluded and reported here four days ago uh that this uh audio seemed to be not authentic was not authentic and was created using artificial intelligence tools such as an including a softwares uh such as Microsoft’s Bing chat and the ever so popular open AI in what seems to be a one-of its kind or unprecedented deep fake audio Revenge case in the United States these things they they promise so much good don’t they but often just get turned to to evil use and uh clearly this poor gentleman the the victim of a very uh elaborate and very dastardly scam Kathleen is any way that we at home or at work or wherever we are can can verify if a piece of audio or an image or a video created uh using artificial intelligence is actually you know in any way genuine or telling the truth well just as there is there are all those software tools out there and accessible to create deep fake content like this one there are also tools online to detect if any given image or sound was created using artificial intelligence we ran this audio through Locust uh that detects AI fraud and the results uh yielded that this audio was most likely created using artificial intelligence and there are other more accessible uh softwares out there for example AI or not uh that you can also use at home however this software has uh been known to give some false positives nevertheless it does seem that these AI software detection software should be more widespread and mainstream in high schools out there as uh high schools across the us all the way from New Jersey uh to California have been scrambling to address troubling deep fake in incidents for instance when recently male students use AI nude apps to create fake nude images of their female classmates students as young as 12 years old uh so AI has become a tricky uh regulation subject in Washington with more uh and more cases of Def fake technology used to weaponize or cause harm as there’s no federal law out there yet in the US that criminalizes or uh that criminalizes the generation or dissemination of uh deep fakes or explicit deep fake imagery uh even though states have recently individual states have recently introduced some bills aiming uh to make these acts illegal the quicker that’s done the better because it’s not just the United States Catalina it’s everywhere across the world and it causes a lot of damage to the victims and as you say Catalina uh some girls are young as 12 are being victimized by their alleged school friends it’s absolutely disgraceful and something needs to be done to regulate this kind of thing on the good side of it of course there are many great uses for AI but it seems at the moment we’re just seeing a kind of
