‘Chad is trying to show it can make this democratic transition from military rule to civilian rule’

Chad is surrounded by instability on its eastern border that war with Sudan which has seen a big influx of refugees coming across the border into Chad we’ve also had kud in neighboring nier we’ve had Mali as well has had a cudar in recent years bkin Faso as well so this election this presidential election is particularly important for chadians because it is seeing the end of this transition period this three-year transition period which began after the killing of the late president Idris debbi on the battlefields he was visiting troops in the north of the country and he was killed on the battlefields then and that led to this transition period which we’re seeing now the next step for chadians to come out of this transition period in which the military took over control the next step is this presidential election and of course it’s really important here in a region where instability is really the number one word so Chad trying to show that it can make this democratic transition from military rule in civilian rule

France 24’s Claire Paccalin reports from Chad’s capital N’Djamena as Chadians began voting for a president on Monday in an election ostensibly aimed at ending military rule but dismissed by opponents of junta leader Mahamat Idriss Deby as a farce.
