Birth trauma: Grieving parents demand action over failing maternity services

it’s like I was just getting dismissed like I wasn’t being listened to when Finn was born um I turned to Ruth and said just wait he’ll cry he’ll cry it’s what you expect but he never did when Ruth and Martin’s first son Finn was born his skin was pale and his body limp his parents had trusted the midwives leading their birth in Center but he was badly injured during delivery just eight short days later his parents were advised to turn off support keeping him alive you leave the hospital expecting to leave with your baby and you leave with a memory boook instead no one expects that we we trusted these people and they let us down they failed us at an inquest the coroner said there was a failure to follow established guidelines at a unit led by midwives and that a lack of clear leadership at the birth center also contributed to the sad events he will now write recommendations to all birth centers across the capital and Finn’s parents say it’s vital that lessons are learned the likelihood is that more children will die as a result of poor care understaffing and a lack of leadership and management I’d like to have seen that he’d made it a national letter King’s College trust accepted the coroner’s findings and apologize to the kennedies for serious failings in the care they received adding it has made positive changes to maternity services at the trust but the lawyer lead in Finn’s case say the problems are nationwide clearly it’s not confined to one single trust there’s a systemic issue which needs to be looked at and a national inquiry would be helpful Ruth and Martin are now focused on keeping Finn’s memory alive especially for his younger brother Remy but they also hope that their story will provide the framework for reform there’s been the talk of maternity crisis it they’re in it and they have no idea how to get out of it Shaman Freeman Powell Sky News

A coroner is writing to all birth centres across London following the death of a new born baby, Finn Kennedy, who was injured during labour at a birthing unit.

A lack of monitoring and leadership by NHS midwives was highlighted at the inquest of Finn, who died in 2021, after he was starved of oxygen during birth and suffered brain damage.

His parents Ruth and Martin Kennedy sit down with Sky News to discuss the events that led to their son’s death and their hope for government action on maternity services across the country.
