The thing that really bothers me is this: would Prince Charles, the heir to the throne have been allowed to get away with this by the palace?

2) they wouldn’t have let the direct heir to the throne be involved in scandal such as this….. which means they’re fine with nonce behaviour, just as long as its a lesser royal.

However.. the royal family are human. They like everyone else have members of their family that they wish they never had. And like any family will try to protect their own by whatever means possible. They obviously have more means available.
