Thoughts?

  1. I’m not saying that things necessarily have changed very much since then, but mentioning that the article is 9 years old might be good.

What annoys me with articles like this is that the study itself is not linked, and none of the methodology is explained.

The numbers for Finland are of course not flattering, and I don’t want to make this a “what about other places” discussion, but without knowing how they survey was done I could imagine that the definition of what classifies as violence varies a lot between countries and cultures.

  2. Article is 9 years old, really?

I have seen newer article some time ago, and actually one of the reasons describes is that in Finland (and other nordic countries), womans are more easily to report about even small violence. Compared to southern countries, where woman will not talk about this as this is “shame”. I don’t know if I this is true or not, but this might be one reason.

I do know that, for example, in Russia, it is kinda usual that alcoholic husband beats own wife, but wife continue to live with him, because there are no other options. It is hardly the case in Finland, as it is easier for a woman here to divorce and live without husband.

And of course, any violence is wrong.

PS: I can’t find this article right now.

  3. Wife carrying is still the #1 sport and the wife beating championships are still in the planning stage.

I guess someone beat us in it.

We can’t #1 in every statistic.

  4. A foreign woman in Finland claimed big part of it is about honest reporting. I don’t know how she knows or she thinks she knows it. Was just telling that suicides and certain violence is completely hidden in her original (catholic) home country, as an example.

  5. Reporting bias. In FI women can be sure that their complaints are taken seriously, thus they are more likely to report any case – while in countries where the police is not likely to take action, there is not much sense in reporting it in the first place.

This is not a “black and white” situation, of course, most countries are somewhere in the grey area. But you can easily explain the reporting differences between eg. Northern and Southern Europe this way.

  6. Happiest country in the world tho… might be on to something here 😏

Disclaimer: no kind of violence is acceptable, and domestic violence is particularly abhorrent. Do not beat or abuse your spouse or child, or actually, anyone. Have a nice day.
