My brother at Christmas said he was on a Rugby Ref course and I mentioned “oh I was thinking of doing the the same for Football”.
My whole family turned to me and said “to get abused”?
And they’re right. I can’t be fucked being abused, so I cancelled.
> A man who trains football referees has spoken of his frustration over officials quitting the game following abuse by players, managers and fans.
Well there’s and easy answer for the first one, any backchat and it’s an instant red card. Can refs card/exclude managers etc? Not sure, but I suspect they can.
As for the fans, that should be the stewards (or other officials) enforcing. Doubt a ref can do much really.
I have never understood the total lack of respect players have for referees. I guess they are too used to earning millions a week, being told they are amazing, and thus right up themselves (there are a few exceptions, obvs).
I’ve never understood why football referees put up with the abuse they do.
Even in the top flight game, they can make a perfectly legitimate decision, then be surrounded by players swearing and shouting at them, advancing in a threatening manner, and they just ignore it and back off.
Try that in a game of rugby and see where it gets you.
Unfortunately children see this happening on the TV or at games week in, week out, and replicate it. I’ve seen even U8 games where they’re arguing with the ref. It seems to be an endemic part of football culture that’s just tolerated. It shouldn’t be.
