**From The Telegraph:**
Germany is considering introducing conscription for all 18-year-olds, as it looks to [boost its troop numbers](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/04/26/germany-celebrate-veterans-day-first-time-since-1871/) in the face of Russian military aggression.
Military planners in Berlin are in the final stages of discussing three options, two of which involve a form of conscription, according to leaked plans reported in the German media.
[Defence Minister Boris Pistorius](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/01/25/germany-not-ready-for-a-military-emergency-boris-pistorius/) is set to go public with the official plans by June.
In one of the options being discussed, Germany would bring back a compulsory military year for young men once they turn 18, which was suspended in 2011, and apply it to women as well. This would require a change to the German constitution, but is seen inside the ministry as most likely to receive societal approval.
Another option would only apply to 18-year-old men, but would not see everyone selected. They would be required to fill in an online form and could then be chosen for service, according to details leaked to Die Welt newspaper. This is seen by the defence ministry as “a strong signal” to both allies and rivals.
The third option would avoid compulsory service, focusing instead on “optimising” the current system by engaging in [more proactive recruitment campaigns](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/01/05/german-army-use-flexible-working-to-attract-gen-z-soldiers/).
However, Mr Pistorious is believed to be against that route. During a trip to Washington this week, he said: “I’m convinced that Germany needs a form of military conscription.”
Mr Pistorius, who polls regularly show to be the country’s most popular politician, has previously described the decision to suspend conscription as “a mistake”.
Its possible reintroduction comes as Germany’s ageing society means the number of soldiers heading into retirement is outstripping the number of new recruits joining up to replace them.
Meanwhile, Berlin has also set a target of raising the size of its armed forces from some 180,000 today to more than 200,000.
The defence ministry is believed to be sceptical that this target can be met without some form of conscription.

That’s equality !
>Another option would only apply to 18-year-old men, but would not see everyone selected.
Fuck that !
There’s a slight difference between conscription of 18 years olds and one year military *or* social duty
Wow maybe they shouldn’t have waited so long to send the panthers
They don’t need conscription they simply need to put in programs to make the military attractive, pay, healthcare, education, and opportunity. The Military needs to project an image of pride. All young people want to be part of something bigger than them. The German military could provide this if they built a professional force. There should also be benefits to serving as well like guaranteed University slots when they leave, university credits from what they learned in the military. Conscription will never be fair because people with the means will get their sons out of selection.
Just give them the f*cking Tauruses and you won’t have to
So, in the past ~2 months these things happened:
1. Baltic countries (and now Poland) started working on defensive line along Russian and Belarus borders
2. France started openly speaking about sending troops to Ukraine for “training” (that’s how US started sending troops to Vietnam, and how Russia started sending troops to Korea)
3. And now Germany wants to conscript EVERY kid from high school, both men and women.
Yeah… Do they have some super critical intel on Russian plans?
Why is it in the age of equality only our sons get forced to join the military? Feminists will undoubtedly march for the right to be conscripted I’m sure…
Nice try, 4th Reich.
We have come a long way from those 20,000 helmets.
Good idea. Should be the case for all countries in Europe. We’ve been caught sleeping, and it’s time to wake up.
Its not gonna happen for years. Even for the people that want to serve Germany there isnt enough housing, equipment, or a surplus of personnel qualified for doing basic trainings.
That will be popular.
I wonder how many will protest. I bet millions will.
>Both men and women could be called up to arrest decline of armed forces
Germany, I am loving the equality you are showing.
Maybe it would have been easier if Germany hadn’t been working so closely with Russia and Putin for years on oil and gas building pipelines to bypass Ukraine and telling everyone in Europe who were warning them about Russia that they’re wrong and overacting.
Why can’t the politicians go out and kill each other for once
I know a good deal about Russia. Nato should be arming fast to avoid a war. The only thing that will stop Putin expansion is overwhelming defensive force.
I cant help but think (with all the bitching about conscription, slow economic growth, migrants, and low birthrates that accepting migrants would fill a military, have babies born, bring in tax dollars, and increase consumerism (grow the economy). Mandatory military for migrants would help with ethnic integration and fostering national pride.
As a finn, I think a year of service for your country is a very valuable experience. You do learn a lot at that age. Hopefully they’d implement it well, it can really improve cohesion within a country
For anyone wondering.
We are already at war.
Putin has explicitly said he and his allies (China, NK, Iran, Syria, insert a bunch of 3. World countries) wants to change the world order.
There is no reason to doubt it.
There is a clear pattern of autocratic states meddeling in democratic elections, the flow of information and the whole ground works to pacify the west. But like all the other times this has been done in history, it always leads to war.
It will do so again.
And we would like to not go into it woefully unprepaired.
Now look at the military investments being done.
Europe and the US expects this to go hot within 5 years. What Ukraine is now, is a place to keep the nazi forces until we are ready.
Expect Ukraine to get their hands on more and more equipment and “training personell” while western armies prepare.
The uk needs this tbh 18 year olds round here just go robbing bikes and stabbing old women absolute fuckin scum
I wonder if the ‘new arrivals’ get this privilege too or children of them.
This is just populist theater trying to get the nod of approval from boomers who are angry about the allegedly lazy GenZ and want them to be taught discipline. It makes zero sense from a military strategy point of view. It’s not gonna happen.
So, they have 180k in their armed forces and want 200k so they present three options.
1. restart conscription of men and women at age of 18
2. setup a voluntary signup for men where they may be conscripted
3. start a more proactive recruiting campaign
Since conscription will require a change to the constitution, start with option 3. Although the change to the constitution might work since conscription was only removed in 2011, making the job more attractive to recruits should be the goal. They should focus on the drones more to make it more appealing to the gamers. Remote control tanks and planes and boats are the new war meta.
