This is huge. For example in Germany, around a third of carbon emissions are caused by transport – and a large part of that by private car use. And we know that about half of all car trips are less than five kilometers long, which is a perfect bike distance.
By the way, even in a relatively car-centric European country like Germany, it is entirely possible to live without using a private car. I do, and being mid-fifty I never had one . Of course, the more car-centric a society is, it requires more adaptations, sometimes more planning, and also a certain degree of stubbornness.
