Bloody Denmark beating us again!
Our worst indiciator being “LEGISLATIVE INDICATOR” where the RSF notes:
“A broadly welcomed report recommending more specific protection for public interest journalism and the creation of mechanisms for combatting SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation) was supposed to be turned into a bill in 2024. But there were some concerns around the abolition of juries in defamation cases. The main opposition party, Sinn Fein, was criticised for highjacking defamation proceedings to muzzle journalists.”
We are also down from 2nd place last year with our biggest drop being “SECURITY INDICATOR”. Overall landscape currently getting worse for press freedom in Ireland.

Just saw a clip from Fox News yesterday that explains why they are 55th.
It’s an openly known thing that this week Donald Trump met with executives of the largest oil companies in the world and offered to amend USA legislation to allow more emissions and less caps on oil exploration and will remove protections for national parks and animals so they can destroy even more if they give him a billion dollars for his campaign right now.
A panel of 4 Fox hosts discussed this and laughed it off like it was no big deal tried to put a funny spin on it like ‘oh look at jolly old Trump making deals it’s what he does best’ 🤦🏻♂️. If Biden did something like that they would encourage ppl to shoot him!
Regardless of what people think, whatever happens over there affects us here sooner or later.

Not surprising if you check to a lot of news from around the world. Despite the criticisms, RTE news is really very factual and unbiased. Same for most of news outlets.

RWB is funded by the European Commission, various international government departments and private foundations such as the Open Society foundation and the Wellspring foundation.
Their whole shtick is promotion of globalism and liberal pluralism. Ireland scores highly because that is all our media does. For instance our media has never had any meaningful criticism of immigration policy. That wins us top marks and a pat on the head from RWB.

I know our press are free, but a lot of journos would want to be upskilling on the auld internet. Even RTE occaisonally mentions Twitter outrage in stories like it means something, when anyone with half a brain cell can see it’s mostly bots. AI is going to turn/has already turned social media into a circus, but the only way the people might learn about it in the Irish news is if it suddenly starts targeting rip.ie.
The list is laughable at this point. Israel has murdered vastly more journalists in the past 7 months than any of the countries at the bottom of the list. They also are carrying out a genocide where they block foreign journalists from even entering.

Every journalist in this country is gagged by the defamation act from reporting anything that could even *allude* to misconduct by an individual that isn’t already established as fact in the public realm.
