3. I watched a documentary about this. Since China doesn’t recognize Dual citizenship, even if you become a citizen of the country you fled to, they’ll keep considering you their property and keep an eye on you (or rather, several agents watching you) for the rest of your life.

   Also, the documentary (originally between Swiss-Chinese relations) had an interesting anecdote about some day in Spring where some Swiss municipalities (counties) fly a Tibetan flag in support of Tibet independence. The local mayors get a sternly worded letter of condemnation every year sent by the Chinese embassy in Bern in retaliation. They instantly throw it away to the garbage bin without opening it.

   Imagine being so thin skinned that you care that much about what some villages on the other side of the world say about you…

4. For a country with the resources and global economic power of China, this seems like extremely clumsy foreign interference

   Hiring an American private eye to do everything from gather dirt on this guy to potentially injure or kill him was unlikely to work and *very* likely to be discovered by federal investigators. Not to mention that the optics once it gets reported are terrible for the CCP

   This whole thing makes them look delusional and incompetent

5. China is still harassing the “dissidents” who fled to Taiwan in the 1940s, all 23 million of them.
