Dirty lying fraud. No way did HMRC say that it was a careless mistake.
*Nadhim Zahawi confirms he nearly evaded £5m in tax
If creating an off-shore company registered in Gibraltar to hold your company shares wasn’t an attempt to avoid tax, what was the purpose? You don’t do that shit in error.
Filling your self-assessment late is an error. This wasn’t an error.
[edit] Forgot to say, he also tried to threaten and sue using a SLAPP strategy against the journalists looking into it.
“Error” my arse, he knew exactly what he was doing – he was even the fucking Chancellor of the Exchequer, who sets the bloody rules.
Compare the recent coverage of this vs Angela Rayner’s few thousand pounds as well – this is over a thousand times **more money.**
So would careless be an accident?
You’d think these top accountants would be on their game.
They’ll do whatever the people let them get away with tbh.
And the most astounding thing is that he said it with a straight face. That’s not easy.
Everybody makes mistakes when dealing with peanuts.
Most people would be in jail… “Oh my apologies you’re rich, yes, if you could pay a bit of it so the public are happy we’ll drop the matter sir”
He lied again that HMRC said what he did was accidental or non-deliberate. HMRC cannot and would not give an exonerating, ex culpable judgement on the actions of someone trying to stiff the UK exchequer of £5m. He is a tax dodging lying sack of shit. Also he should have been asked about the SLAPP lawsuit he initiated trying ti suppress the truthful, public interest journalism of Dan Neidle and others. He is a Slapper.
If this was 20 / 30 / 40 years ago it would be a major enough scandal to cause a party downfall.
With it being the Tories this probably doesn’t even hit the top 10.
The fact he was Chancellor is such an unfunny joke.
‘Do as I say, not as I do’.
Good thing it was a couple grand otherwise he might have been in wall to wall newspaper coverage
Whoopsie sorry I forgot to transfer you the 5 mil!
Tax code really needs to be simplified. If the ex-chancellor of the exchequer can’t figure it out, how is anyone else supposed to?
Lying liar lies about not lying and cheating. Not really a surprise is it.
This is pocket change compared to Alan Sugar who was caught out on £100m+ due to bad advice.
I hate when I accidentally forget to pay millions in tax. It happens.
The rich pay fines whilst the poor go to jail.
It’s called D.E.M.O.C.R.A.C.Y – so get used to it you plebs…..
So, the chancellor of the exchequer was careless in completing his tax returns to the extent he paid £5m. Wonderful. That’s what the tories gave us.
Was he ‘careless’ when he claimed for heating his horse stables I wonder…
Just boils my blood really.
Notice how all the absolute shite about Angela Rayner’s criminal tax issues over selling her home has now been memory-holed?
Why is it always like this in this country? Some ***obvious*** bollocks that anyone with two brain cells can see is a non-issue being grossly over-inflated manages to absolutely fucking dominate our media cycle and social discourse for weeks at a time, to just be dropped literally over the course of a few days, making absolutely no impact, and apparently none of the people so caught up in it taking a moment to reflect on why exactly they got so animated about it. The manipulation is so fucking blatant its unreal. If I became aware I was on the receiving end of such manipulation I’d be really bloody angry at those I’d caught pulling my strings.
But for real though, who in their right mind honestly believes you could receive ***millions*** of pounds just land in your lap, squirrel it away, and somehow think not only do you not need to pay any tax on that, but you don’t even need to consult anyone like a financial advisor to check? That was effectively Zahawi’s line here, and we were all seriously just expected to accept that was a silly little mistake anyone in the same position would have made.
Genuinely really pisses me off.
