Was down in Perth at the weekend for probably first visit since an unfortunate fatwa by the P&J 25 years ago. Got to say the city centre is beautiful in the sunshine, streets are clean, folk friendly, low quotient of neds, jakies or junkies. Lots of good bars, eateries and brilliant gallery.

  1. Having lived all over the country and not having a reason to visit in past 25 years this came as a real shock.

Places like Dumfries, Kilmarnock, Paisley, Aberdeen, Paisley Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness should all be looking at what whoever planned the city centre in Perth has done. Just perfect little city, with great art work and a genuinely friendly vibe.

No doubt folk on here who live or work in Perth can inject a dose of reality, but for me and my partner we loved it. Had lunch in park, walked along the river visited the refurbished Perth gallery, dinner in the Royal George, drinks in some brewery. Braw time, we’ll be back.

  2. Now what did you do to get the P&J so angry ? 🤔

  3. “low quotient of neds, jakies or junkies.”

You clearly didn’t visit South Street.

Perth can be beautiful though, glad you enjoyed it.

  4. Perth city centre suffering from the same problems as many other places (boarded up high street, closed department shops – Perth lost McEwans department store some years ago now and you can still see it half empty in the town centre) with probably less levels of dire abject poverty and destitution because it’s got a weer working class and larger middle class so there is a bigger financial buffer when the economy takes a hit. Perth absolutely does have poverty and schemes but they are tiny compared to places like Edinburgh or Glasgow or, more appropriate for Tayside, Dundee.

Plus, sadly cities and towns like Perth Stirling Alloa and Dunfermline are all becoming commuter towns for Edinburgh and Glasgow these days. So many people either work from home or drive daily. Ruins the community in some ways I think. Makes the place a dormitory.
