1. Landfill methane is created when organics are landfilled instead of prevented or diverted to other beneficial uses like compost, mulch or biogas. EPA estimates that 58% of new US landfill inputs are food waste.

   Landfill and municipal wastewater methane at 20% to 25% are the third biggest source of US methane, after a) enteric emissions and manure ponds in the cattle/dairy industry, and b) leaks by the oil and gas sector.
