Funny or in bad form? Dub fans mimicking the two lads in Carlow.

  1. It’s a tricky one alright. On one hand, the story is so surreal that you can understand people’s joking about it.

On the other, the more we learn about that poor man the more tragic and frankly grim it seems

  2. We were throwing out jokes from the second it happened on reddit, I don’t think we exactly have the moral high ground.

  3. A man died with no dignity. He probably spent a chunk of his life enduring addiction in his family. And is now a joke across the country.

It is hard to point the finger at these guys as we probably all have played our part in the disrespect with the flood of Whatsapp updates etc. These guys just happened to go viral with their banter.

But it is 100% bad form.

  4. > Funny or bad form?

The two aren’t always mutually exclusive and this is one of those times where it snugly fits in the Venn Diagram intersection.

    The Independent noted that:

*The dead man’s appearance caused the An Post employee to become suspicious and she attempted to establish if he was unwell. It is understood that at this point one of the younger men suggested he might be having a heart attack, and dropped the body to the ground.*

    It’s hilariously tragic

  5. I think the idea of the situation is funny on the surface at least, because of the absurdity, but going to the actual place and reeanacting it isn’t funny and pretty bad form

  6. As a society we don’t have to universally agree on if it’s funny or poor taste. You can make your own decision on that.

Personally, it’s humourous because it’s so bonkers but I can imagine the family of the man not being one bit happy. It’s all perspective

  7. Well yes but is it any worse than all the other shitposts people have been making.

Easy to judge a couple of lads outside a post office, haven’t seen a post decrying all the Reddit posts about a poor dead man who had their body abused.

  8. Both. Like a lot of dark humour.

When I first heard it, it sounded comical. But the more ye think about it the true horror dawns on ye… What drove it, the disrespect to the deceased and his family, the desperation and stupidity.

I’d find the above image funny and a bit bad

  9. It’s both to be fair. I think the whole thing is so bizarre but it must be heartbreaking for the man’s family who don’t even know the truth yet. I personally wouldn’t make jokes about it.

  10. I think the initial jokes coming off the back of how surreal and absurd it was, when we had no details and just a bizarre situation, were understandable and funny.

But this is not the same to me. They’re actively creating another absurdness, acting like they’re at a tourist attraction.

I have very dark humor, I made a joke immediately after hearing the initial news and I can never walk away from taking the piss out of Carlow but this is not funny to me at all.

  11. In isolation it’s funny but you can guarantee the lads doing it are a group of arseholes who love this stuff so long as they’re not on the receiving end.

  12. I think bad form tbh. A man’s dead and his body used in a disgusting way… Fairly accurate to say they picked his corpse. Like, only a week ago the nation was outraged by a horrific killing, maybe I’m nuts but what sort of country is it becoming?

  13. I’d say the more pressing question is if it’s bad form to be taking pictures of people you don’t know and posting them to social media without blurring their faces?

  14. The bad form element is the person who initially shared the photo online.

At that point it’s gone from a somewhat dark joke amongst friends, to something which might be seen by those who knew the dead man.

  15. My sympathy is not only for the family of the deceased but also the staff of Hosey’s for whom this was a traumatic experience

  16. He was only 66. I mean, ffs, the man had years of unclaimed pension ahead of him and he kicks the bucket. One wonders how long they’d have tried to keep it up if they got away with it the first time?

  17. It’s funny. People need to stop taking everything so serious. And considering the first thing this subreddit did when we saw the headline was take the piss, nobody is in a position to say otherwise.

  18. Just read the article. I genuinely cannot believe this. This is actual slapstick comedy in real life. Fuck me.

  19. Definitely bad form. I mean, who takes a picture of a few lads having a laugh and then putting it up on the internet with the intent of exposing them for making a joke.

Like, what part of this do you think could be “bad form”? Is it in case the family members saw it and got offended? I doubt the family members of the dead man who live in Carlow were ever going to see this joke between 4 lads from Dublin.

Of course, that was until you decided to put it publically on the internet. Now there’s a very high chance the family members will see this, all because of you, OP.

But hey OP, real glad you got to not only get some karma and do a bit of virtue signalling, all while being a hypocrite.

    Gobshite.
