  17. If that oil is easy to extract, then there is going to be a hug conflict over this. The easy to get oil is long gone. That’s why they go to the arctic, Antarctic, deep sea, etc. to get oil now. If the area is easy to access and doesn’t freeze in the winter, then it’s probably easy to get, making the oil there extremely more valuable than shale oil, or heavy oil, or tundra oil or deep sea oil. The EROI for easy to get oil is huge, far exceeding the typical 10:1 for normal oil now.

    What stops any of the countries not a signatory to the Antarctic treaty from claiming the natural resources or even territory of Antarctica?

    (Apart from the political and military might of the signatories, and aligned nations)
