  1. Anyone fancy handing over their unlocked smartphone to the guards at a stop?

  2. Nice, I can finally leave my wallet at home most days after this.

  3. 🙄 Just do it on biometrics, fingerprint or face… any warrants, drivers license, passport etc.

  4. So if you’re driving, and your phone runs out of battery, and your licence is on your phone… Do you have it on your person or not?

  5. So could your tv licence….but sure you could potentially watch RTE content from your phone so you better get your smartphone licence as well.

  6. How will it work for banned drivers?

Currently, a banned driver is supposed to surrender their licence…….in the vast majority of cases, this never happens.

I know there’s nothing preventing a banned driver from actually driving.

  7. I’ve a picture of the front and back of my licence stored on my phone in its own album for quick access. No Garda has ever had an issue with it.

  8. Government? Digital? I predict that this will be a shitshow.

  9. I hate how willingly my fellow citizens will support something like this.

    “If you’ve nothing to hide…”

“Sure what would they do with X anyways”

    “We don’t live in China”

    “It’ll be handy for…”

    “It’s not mandatory…” (yet)

    “Only conspiracy theorists would think…”

  10. Yet they can’t manage tap on tap off card or Apple Pay/wallet on the buses

  11. I hope this means the license can be read and verified via NFC like a virtual debit card. It would be handy for other situations where you have to verify your identity. We should also have an EU wide digital passport that can be scanned by an NFC reader at borders and airports.

  12. This is a positive step and 90% of comments in here are negative, never change r/ireland

  13. If only I could lose the leap card, I’d never need a wallet again.

  14. This government seems to have a hard-on for being wreckless with our data.

  15. There is absolutely no need for this policy. Nobody has ever asked about it and it solves no issue.

So far this year we have this, the banning of cigs for under 21s, the bullshit deposit return scheme, a ‘task force’ to deal with street crime in Dublin.

Any other nonsense policies we can introduce?

How about dealing with the actual issues facing people, housing, health, infrastructure?

  16. Btw Ukraine had an app for years that has most of your docs in digital format: passport, ID, driving license, diplomas etc. That said I think Ireland would benefit much more from cutting down waiting times for driving tests, they are just ridiculous nowadays

  17. Ok … Now do it for paying for bus fare … It was told it would be 4 years or something before that could be brought in…

  18. Everyone: complaining.

Me: “What’s going on with his tie in the thumbnail!”

  19. Be nice if they could include blood type and donor wishes on the digital card in the event of accident.

  20. We have this in NSW Australia and you can use your phone to tap onto public transport. I literally never carry a wallet anymore.

I actually still do carry my public transport travel card though, so if my phone dies / gets lost I can still get home lol.

  21. I’m tired of being a slave to my phone for everything…. And talking about putting all the eggs in the same basket….what happens with being fully dependent on it
    1. when you lose your phone?
    2. When you have an empty battery
    3 when you travel abroad

  22. If you’re pulled over and asked for your licence, you’ll get done for using your phone while driving.

  23. This is nice but also baffling. Why there is no system where Garda can quickly check details of my licence, insurance and tax if I provide my details/ PPS? There would be no need for paper discs at the window. I am not Irish native so maybe I don’t understand this, just complying to the rules.

  24. It’s bollox it’s like the GAA are doing by forcing ppl buy tickets online, thereby excluding pensioners. Except this is worse, it could try to force ppl to buy smartphones. Just makes it harder to say “I’ve no licence on me guard”, and then all the fiddling about on a fkin device to try to get it up if u meet a garda looking for it.

  25. Great idea. I’ve just a picture of my licence on my phone, good job as I have no idea where my licence is, it’s in a very safe place
