The concept of the nation state in Europe is relatively new. This strange idea that it represents some kind of eternal identity is not realistic. Similar to statelets of the past, it is simply not equipped to deal with the reality of today and tomorrow, which is why we see the nation state continuing to weaken as the EU gets stronger.
I’ve always wondered how a resident of one tiny German nation knew the difference between another tiny nation a few kilometers away.
