Breaking down the latest in Ukraine’s war against Russia

Ukrainian President Vladimir zilinski is postponing all of his upcoming foreign trips ke forces are beginning to withdraw from parts of the Northeast where Russia opened a new front last week this is Nick ke meanwhile US Secretary of State Anthony blinkin today announced a$2 billion deal to help support Ukraine the Diplomat is in the besieged country to highlight American Support CBS News intelligence and National Security reporter Olivia gazes joins us now from the state department Olivia what can you tell us about this new Aid and when might Ukraine actually see it sure so this $2 billion actually comes from the pot of money that was unlocked by that $60 billion supplemental that Congress finally managed to pass last month and it’s actually meant as a more medium or long-term investment in Ukraine’s own defenses it’s not a presidential dra draw down wherein the US pulls from its own weapon stockpiles and sends them immediately to Ukraine both types of Aid are important and arguably right now the ukrainians are in most dire need for ammunition and crucially air defenses its leaders have been pleading for Patriot systems uh for months now the secretary did not commit the US to sending Patriot systems uh in this trip but he said the US was working urgently to identify units elsewhere and get them to the ukrainians acknowledging as you mentioned that very dire situation now in the north and east in the harke region and you you describe it as dire Olivia we mentioned president zalinski C canceling his foreign duties he’s not going anywhere what is is the significance of that and what does it say about this moment for Ukraine sure it certainly highlights The Bleak and Urgent scenario that is unfolding there where some Ukrainian troops have had to fall back amid an intensifying Russian campaign in the north and east president zalinsky was supposed to travel to Spain and Portugal later this week uh in part to Spain to sign a bilat bilateral security agreement with the Prime Minister that’s now off while he stays close to monitor that unfolding situation in the Northeast uh blinkin did mention today by the way that the US and Ukraine were also putting their own finishing touches on a bilateral security agreement that could be signed in the coming weeks uh that’s important because it’s not specific to this Administration it’s presumably a more enduring way for the US to provide military and financial support to the ukrainians should there be a new president in office as of November uh President Biden and president zalinsky are expected to meet in person in the coming weeks possibly as soon as June on the margins of the gummit G7 Summit in Italy uh and possibly uh at the NATO Summit in Washington in July in order to Ink that bilateral security agreement all right Olivia gazes thank you thank you

  3. Trump will not be allowed to let Ukraine fall even if he promises it to the American people. He will get one of "the talks"

    In reality he will try and negotiate a cease fire in exchange for Crimea but that warm water port is very imoortant to Russia so that might not be an option.
