Does anyone know from experience how long do Swiss Customs take to clear a package? (bought from Aliexpress) and for some weird reason tracking got updated to “customs clearance underway” twice. Any ideas why?

  1. It depends whats inside, they open it and estimate the value for the bill you will get if you didn’t paid it beforehand.

And at the moment they’re probably understaffed because of quarantine and sick days.

If it goes for more than a week I would ask them over the phone.

  2. There are three possibilities, from most likely to least likely:

    a) It has been held & openend by customs as the contents were not described correctly or it has been taken out during a routine check. In this case you will get a letter in the next few days asking you to submit the invoice and/or value declaration.

    b) It has been checked by customs as the content was above 65 CHF, however in this case it would not take that long and you would have received it by now and paid the fees at the door or via TWINT.

    c) They are extremely backed up and it’s a “slow shipping” package, meaning it will take longer, that can happen sometimes. However, in this case you would not see the “customs retention” notice.

    TL;DR

Incorrect / implausible declaration and you will get a form by mail which you will have to fill out. Pro-tip: Return it via e-mail (scanned), it’s way faster.
