  3. I only read the headline but isn’t this technically the truth? It’s not “normal” to feel this way. It’s the result of wiring not being correct up there.

    Not saying there’s something wrong with being trans and that they don’t deserve respect. Just saying, by definition, it is a “fault”.

    I’d say if you can legally say it’s an illness, wouldn’t it be easier to provide solutions? Surgery, meds etc?

  5. See, I can’t help but feel like the negative response to this unveils a more regressive and outdated attitude towards mental health than what the Peruvian government has said.

    If you think that mental illness is somehow an “attack” or that it’s a label that makes you somehow lesser, you’re being bigoted against everyone who suffers from *any* mental illness.

    And no, it doesn’t “open the way to conversion therapy” unless you think coversion therapy actually works, which it doesn’t. It opens the way no more than applying leeches or trepanning.

    I actually feel like both sides of this debate are dominated by awful people in different ways.

  7. It’s just true. Being gay isn’t because its a preference for something. Being trans is a rejection of reality in favor of delusion. Then many people act out this delusion. Going as far as self mutilation. Seems so obvious, but people will forgo logic to appear virtuos.

  8. Well that is a mental illness I don’t think that’s news to anybody. The question is whether they will use this to somehow discriminate against them.

  9. The problem is the stigma associated with mental health issues. Body disphoria is a stressful problem for the person that experiences it and usually needs appropriate therapies to be solved, like transitioning. But here they are clearly using the label “mental illness” as a weapon against these people, to disparage not help them

    I know people don’t give a shit, but if it’s up to me all a trans person has to do is get approval from a shrink/therapist that they are trans and aren’t masking other issues and they should be allowed to transition.

    Also, non-binary is also a mental illness? That is just insane. They aren’t hurting themselves or anyone else.

    This is how it was done in France.

  23. I don’t have a position on this but I guess they could technically be right. A woman’s mind in a man’s body and vice versa. If I thought I were an elephant someone might say I’m mentally ill too?

  26. Statistically speaking transpeople suffer a lot more from mental illnesses so I’m not sure why this is so shocking to anyone. These people are almost always in some way traumatized in their childhood from something, be it abuse by parents or bullying or something similar. The “transmovement” is just an outlet for most of these people because they get a sense of belonging there which they never had before.
