Honestly should depend on data being processed. Not all data is useful.
“Environmentalists say they’re wrecking the planet” is a spineless way of putting that, it’s not an opinion it’s a demonstrable fact
Environment will never beat economy.
Not saying it’s right but I do think it’s true, unfortunately
I’ll never not find it humorous to find posts on the Internet, which will be stored in a data centre, giving out about data centres.
Data centres are necessary. If we didn’t have them then everyone would be managing data themselves which would be less energy efficient.
Environmental research projects use data centres 🤷♂️
Most people shitting on data centers don’t understand why they are necessary or how they work. We aren’t going to have less of them either, only more.
Data centers are an integral part of the modern world economy. Do you like having a bank account, health services, and apps on your phone? All of those require data centers.
Data centers are designed for maximum efficiency. They minimize their energy usage because that minimizes their expenses.
Is it not better for the planet in general to have them in cooler climates like Ireland? They’d use more power to cool if they were in warmer climates. And, given the way society can’t get enough of computing resources (however frivolous the use case), they’re a necessary part of modern life.
If the environmentalists don’t like it, they can self host their own IT infrastructure powered by renewable energy, and comprising of recycled computing resources. For a start.
Of all the things wrecking the planet they want to attack data centres which employ thousands of people and are necessary for the society we live in
Can’t we just throw up a nuclear plant and be done with it? Bonus points for exporting the excess to Britain for profit
Ireland’s data centres are wrecking the environment. But developers say they’re an economic lifeline.
Fixed the headline

It’s a lack of planning, lack of environmental protection and future thinking from the government is wrecking Ireland.
There’s only one solution here and that’s to increase carbon taxes for the general public.
Edit: I was being sarcastic for those that can’t tell.
Are we not putting strain on our national grid putting data centers needs over domestic users.
And the amount of water they use is ridiculous.
They are needed but should be spread across countries and not cramned into ireland.
Maybe someone can come up with a way for us to house all data in the cold vacuum of space. But in the meantime what do they want done about it?
A nuclear plant is the real answer here
I’ve had an irish environmentalist tell me that their ultimate dream was total countryside depopulation and everyone shoved into shoebox apartments, for efficiency.
Himself of course lived in a nice pile surrounded by a few acres.
Edit to add he was of the fox hunting set. I think a lot of these environmentalists just fancy themselves as the new overlord aristocracy.
How we produce energy is the problem. If it was all green then we have zero issue with energy consumption, data centres, etc.
We have an Armageddon event on the horizon and we desperately and urgently need to stop transforming our atmosphere before it transforms our civilization back into the stone age.
The world needs data centers of course, but as an economic boon for Ireland, ehhh they’re not great. If you look at the number of jobs provided per units of power consumed, its dismal. Ireland hasn’t got the best power grid or capacity, not to mention an easy path to increasing the power grid. Data centers absolutely eat power and HAVE to be on 24/7. If we make Ireland a data center hub, we provide not many jobs for massive increased power consumption that competes with everything else that needs more power in future.
Ireland is the destination of choice for data centres because of our mild weather. They are horrible for the environment and WILL come back to bite us in the ass.
The IDA entices companies here with the promise that they’ll (eventually) be able to brag that their data centres run on fully renewable energy. We do have a plan to massively increase our wind energy production. The problem here is time. If everything goes as planned, this issue will go away on it’s own.
Makes me wonder when or if we’re gonna get to a point where people in charge of data centres go “right lads, getting a bit expensive storing all these cat videos and Instagram food posts. We figure it’s cheaper to just delete a fuckload of useless data than build a new data centre so if you’ve any pictures you like save them onto a hardrive or forever hold your peace”
Buuuut the world will probably be long past saving before that happens
Seems fairly easy to have a middle ground. Make current centres aim to use 100% green energy and any new ones require it.
