Interesting choice of headline. “Sex” with two boys as opposed to “raped” considering they were underage
Since these headlines always provoke the usual comments…
Rape is defined by section 1 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003, which requires the offender to have a penis, and penetrate the mouth/anus/vagina of the victim without their consent. A woman cannot be convicted of rape (save for a *very* rare situation where she aids a male in doing so).
The offence in these circumstances, which the offender was convicted of, is sexual activity with a child contrary to s9 SOA2003. The word “rape” is not used – so the headline is accurate.
The daily mail headline reads like this
Maths teacher Rebecca Joynes, 30, nicknamed ‘Bunda Becky’ by male pupils breaks down in tears as she is found GUILTY of having sex with two students – after trying to blame predatory behaviour on being lonely during Covid to them ‘controlling’ her
Bunda Becky in a headline about a nonce teacher is wild
Notice there is not a single use of the word “abuse” in the article.
And yet the male headteacher who was convicted a few weeks ago had it in the headline.
What a repulsive double standard. She’s a child abuser and a paedophile. One day, the media (and certain people I’ve seen on reddit) will stop minimising people like this because of their gender.
Edit: And I often see people quoting that this isn’t rape by legal definition, which is fair enough. But surely that is another double standard on top of that! These kids were below the age of consent. Therefore the kids had sex without legal consent. If only there were a word for that…
What an absolutely nasty piece of work!
Although the headline should read “Rebecca Joynes: Teacher guilty of sexually abusing two boys” – just saying she had sex makes it sound like that sex wasn’t abuse, or makes it sound like it could even be consenting, when it couldn’t have been.
Award the female abusers with the same headlines as the male abusers please, equality.
She should never be released.
Doing it once you can argue maybe a mistake but repeat times and with another stupid should mean she’s never going to change.
According to sentencing guidelines she should receive a [minimum custodial term of 4 years](https://www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk/offences/crown-court/item/sexual-activity-with-a-child/), however:
>Where there is a sufficient prospect of rehabilitation, a community order with a sex offender treatment programme requirement under [part 3 of Schedule 9 of the Sentencing Code](https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2020/17/schedule/9/part/3/) can be a proper alternative to a short or moderate length custodial sentence.
Additionally, the judge may decide that “Immediate custody will result in significant harmful impact upon others” – namely her infant – so she may end up with a suspended sentence and never see the inside of a cell at all.
So let’s see what happens…
I am SICK of the press downplaying female crimes. It’s always someone else’s fault.
This is a quote from the BBC “she was 28, had just come out of a nine-year relationship, and was flattered by the attention of teenage schoolboys….he sent her flirtatious texts…the boy lied to his his mother that he was staying over at a friend’s house after school”
What the fuck does it matter what he text her? Why does it matter that he lied to his mum? He is a CHILD. A CHILD she groomed to have sex with. She got pregnant with a CHILD!
It’s disgusting. Even the judge seems to be sympathetic to her, saying she will “no doubt want to see her baby”.
Poor bastards. Glad none of my secondary school teachers tried to have their way with me..
The law really needs to change. Men and boys can be raped by women and it’s not fair that it isn’t reflected in law and therefore legal reporting.
Every time it’s a woman: “sex”
Every time it’s a man: “Rape”
Why can’t a woman rape a male in this country? Especially if it’s statutory
We may be heading like the US in terms of female teachers and boys. I watch the law and crime network on YouTube and I recall about 7 months ago they had an expert on saying it is extremely rare for female teachers to do this and ever since there has been a new report weekly. It may be an attitude change that means it gets reported now.
“Paedophile sexually assaults children”.
Let’s call it what it is.
Made the foolish decision to read the Daily Mail comments …
‘She was at a low point when boy B messaged her on Snapchat asking how she was.
“I genuinely thought he cared,” Joynes said’
Wtf, it’s like she has the mentality of a child, 30 years old and ‘flattered’ by the attention of boys she’s supposed to be teaching. I hope they throw the book at her, no greater breach of trust in the profession than that she has done.
What she did with the second child is a straight attempt at gaming the system: get pregnant with the intention of obtaining leniency from the courts
Here we go again with the ‘sex with underage boys’ rather than the sexually abused
