Study: Obesity drug cuts risk of heart attack regardless of weight lost

it’s 10:23 you’re watching Sky News Now to what’s being held as the biggest medical breakthrough since the introduction of statins back in the 198 1980s a new studies suggest that weight loss injections could cut the risk of heart attacks or Strokes by around 20% the 5-year study included more than 177,000 adults with obesity from 41 countries over the first two years of that study the proportion of those who were obese fell sharply from More than 70% to 43 3% after 3 years of treatment participants had a 20% lower risk of a heart attack stroke or dying from cardiovascular disease well the GP and author Dr Ellie Cannon told us why the study really could be a GameChanger for the Health Service when nice regulated these drugs within the last year they actually said people could only have them for two years um because of the sort of Health cost analysis and it wasn’t actually of going to be worth it if if you like and this data really changes things because what this shows is actually the benefits will last even longer than that and this will be saving people money aside from anything else having a heart attack having heart disease or a stroke is very costly to a Health Service so I think this is going to have to change things cross to our science and correspondent Thomas Moore who’s been following this story and Thomas this appears to be a very welcome side effect of the original drug yeah absolutely it was originally being looked at U in Diabetes Type 2 diabetes and they found that people lost weight and and that’s why it was first rolled out to to people who uh were living uh with uh weight issues and and obesity but now it seems uh that these glp1 drugs as the the group is called may have effect well beyond weight loss uh and that is really forcing uh a review of of how these drugs are being used in the NHS you heard there that they only prescribed in very limited circumstances to people um for a period of of two years that I’m sure will now have to be reviewed because this is a very large study involving 177,000 people it showed it was safe and highly effective even at four years that the weight stayed off but also that it had independent of weight an effect on heart disease and that is something that affects 8 million people in in this country about half of those that think might be able to be take these drugs uh and that would be a game Cher for the NHS because quarter of a million uh people are admitted to hospital with heart disease every year 68,000 people die so great for the NHS great for the economy and great for people Thomas thank you so much and just to let you know as well there’s more insight analysis on the Sky News website as well

Medical experts have hailed a new weight-loss drug as the biggest advance in public health since the introduction of statins in the 1980s.

Wegovy suppresses the appetite of patients by making them feel like they are full up.

A new study suggests the injections could cut the risk of heart attacks or strokes by around 20%.

Over the first two years of the study, the proportion of those who were obese fell sharply from more than 70% to just 43%

After three years of treatment, participants had a 20% lower risk of a heart attack, stroke or dying from cardiovascular disease.

  1. Try not to be so gullible pills won’t make a fat mind set thin, eat properly and exercise, and stop looking for an escape from yourself.

  2. It's all about "money" Best of luck getting it from a GP, they have been told NO, it is quite expensive and NEEDS to be maintained to keep effects up. Obese women and men have been a problem for the NHS for decades, with diets not working and Weight Watchers not working they just get a disabled scooter when they are either too large to walk or have chronic hip and knee issues. (and that's going to help what?)

  3. Obesity drugs? Wtf next.

Its about time people took responsibility for their own lives by caring more, eating less, eating healthier.
And after what the sp called pandemic exposed about big pharma, even if i was overweight, i most certainly wouldn't touch anything these murdering monsters make in a lab.

  4. they are talking about Ozempic and its been causing some very nasty side effects in 65%-70+% of those who take it… dispite being fat myself i will NEVER considder this as an option and will use force to prevent its use on me

  5. I'm not taking anything that big pharma pushes ever again. Iv'e heard far too many horror stories.
Stop eating gluten and sugar. Everything in cans and packets is full of the stuff. It damages our gut, makes us put weight on and ultimately, causes metabolic disorders slowly and surely.

  6. The study was done by an independent company called Novo Nordisk A/S? Did they also look at other issues, such as side effects? It makes sense that if obesity causes hart disease, decreasing obesity will decrease the hart disease cause by it. Offering people healthy food, may also decrease hart disease. Maybe. Maybe Novo Nordisk A/S can do a study about this as well?
