Hello everyone! I just moved to Sweden for work and found a lovely place to live, which is a small cabin that’s on a larger property (with a main house and one other cabin). When I moved in, the property owners said they’d just installed a security system in the cabin “as a courtesy” to me. This new system includes a security camera in my bedroom (and my bed is definitely within its field of vision). I’ve attached a picture of the camera.

I found this really disturbing and covered it right away, but I also think it might have audio recording.

Additionally, when I asked how I could get alerts from the system, they said I couldn’t and that all alerts (like from when the alarm is triggered) would go to them. And they’ve started asking me questions, like about whether I set the system when I’m away.

They are also very nosy and constantly coming to my door, going into the storage space under the cabin (which they never told me about), etc.

I want to ask them to remove the camera, but I feel like it’s going to sour my relationship with them. Conversely, I feel so uncomfortable about it. When my partner is visiting, I feel self-conscious about the camera/audio.

Can I just confirm that a camera like this is not normal here, and that I have right to ask for it to be removed?

  1. I think without even googeling it its not allowed.

  2. Looks like a standard camera that Verisure is using or maybe Sector Alarm. Do you have a keypad somewhere near the front door? Maybe some decals/stickers outside on the house/cabin?

Really weird though that they had one installed in the bedroom.

  3. The owner of the alarm can take pictures with Verisure app.

  4. Having a security camera in your bedroom is not considered normal and having them setting it up for you is suspicios as hell (and possibly illegal).

  5. It’s very problematic, although there is some questions.

Are you allowed to live there for frees (as a guest, i.e it’s not your dwelling).

If so, and you were warned about the camera beforehand, I’m not entirely sure what legs you have to stand on, although I’m sure you have some legs to stand on, due to an expectation of privacy. In this case you should contact a lawyer.

Case two. You are renting the place. In this case you have much stronger protection.

Have they applied for a permit to have video surveillance? Is it stated in your contract that they can film you? Etc.

In this scenario, you NEED to contact a lawyer, or Hyresgästföreningen. Your rights have most likely been violated.

And in both scenarios, i think they violated your rights under GDPR.

Tldr; contact a lawyer, your rights might have been seriously violated.

  6. I know its a camera from Verisure.(I’ve handled these)
They are for a burguly alarm.
I dont know how their app works but owners can take pictures with the camera. Im not sure if they can take pictures when the alarm is off, or only when the alarm in turned on.
Its veriweird that they installed a camera in a bedroom.
Alarm companies are not supposed to do that to avoid gdpr incidents.

Edit: it does not have audio uptake. And you have the right to have them take it down.
Its illegal to monitor people against their will.
You can ask them to swap it out for an IR-motionsensor if they insist on aving a burglury alarm i the cabin.

  7. Its Verisures mark on that one. So it only activates and takes pictures once the alarm goes off. No monitoring going on. Once the alarm goes off, pictures are sent to Verisure. Its an automatic system. All their motion triggered sensors look like that, the bottom part is the sensor, triggering the capture. But only when the alarm is activated. And it likely is not, when someone is inside, since it then triggers an alarm.

  8. Verisure. Makes it possible for them to get important information if it’s an emergency, like fire etc. They are only on when something is trigger the larm

  9. As others have said, the owners can use it to monitor you, demand it removed.

  10. Trust your gut feeling and instincts. This is not normal.

  11. Is it the only spot in the cabin to get good pictures of the full area? Seen a few setups like that, but independently it is indeed weird and I’d confront the owners about it or love out.

  12. I have a home alarm from SectorAlarm and the camera in my living room looks exactly the same, I can take photos with it and see them on my phone but only when the alarm is on.
HOWEVER, I do think I remember the verisure guy telling me that their camera can take pics even with the alarm off.

I’d def cover it until something else can be sorted out

  13. I have a similar camera from another security company. It only turns on when the alarm is fully armed so there wouldn’t be a way for them to see you without the alarm also going off. I’d also be uncomfortable having it in the bedroom so definitely try to get to take it down but in the meantime, don’t worry about them creeping on you.

  14. yes you have the right to have it removed.👍

This is in no way normal. In the bedroom???

  15. That’s a verisure alarm and they had a scandal where it got out that they were spying on people and collecting photos to share with one another…

  16. I have this exact camera from verisure. It’s correct that verisure use them to visually see if there is smoke if the fire alarm has been triggered.

BUT the owner can take still pictures whenever he or she wants to via the app.

The owner can easily give you access to the app and then you will get a notification if someone takes a picture.

  17. I have this camera. This is a verisure camera, the footage is only sent to verisure when the alarm goes off.

But the owner of the camera can watch the stream 24/7

So yes, having it in the bedroom is weird as fuck.
