It really can happen to anyone at any income/talent/beauty level. Abusers target victims whose empathy can be used against them. She prays for him because he grew up abused. But he was not an abuser because he grew up abused. Shouldn’t growing up abused have made him *more* sympathetic and not less, and *more* aware that it is a bad way to be? That’s how it is for most people who grew up abused, they do not become abusers themselves. At a certain point he became an adult who was responsible for his own choices.
