  1. I went all the way from Twatt to Boggy Bottom once, that was great. I don’t recommend doing the reverse journey.

  2. how about an epic European road trip from Austria to Scotland? Fucking-Twatt.

  3. There’s a YouTuber who travels all around the Highlands. We should get him on to this.

  4. I went to Twatt in Orkney a few years ago. Shetland is still on my list of future holidays; knowing that there’s another Twatt to visit makes me want to go there even more.

A Twatt to Twatt journey would be great, I wonder if you could get commercial sponsorship?

  5. FWIW it’s actually a pretty nice ferry. Lived up there for 4 years during University and used to travel south for Christmas each year and occasionally other times too. Only got a cabin twice and I always ended up with someone snoring and found I got more sleep bunking in the restaurant. The food on board (breakfast and dinner service) is surprisingly good for a ferry service and is largely local produce and there’s 2 bars iirc, a lounge and a cinema on the longer journeys (it’s been a few years since I’ve been up there).

I still wouldn’t recommend the average person do the journey during the winter months, it can be rough and cancelled at short-ish noticed. The stabilisers can only do so much and I’ve not been the only one pattering to the toilet at 2am doing the odd walking as the ship moves up and down nevermind side to side. I definitely used anti-sickness tablets as I never quite got my sea legs, keeping my stomach full on evening ferrys and having water available helped otherwise I could normally sleep through it. I did have a friend who once went on a risky sailing and couldn’t get into Kirkwall so waited it out in the bay for 5+ hours before just heading to Lerwick. They eventually made it back to Kirkwall over 24 hours later, thankfully it’s a journey I was going to do but due to poor trains couldn’t make it.

The night journeys are definitely easier, you just get on board (I was travelling from Kirkwall) and find a place to sleep. Otherwise finding entertainment especially with the signal restrictions once you get away from bigger settlements and out into the sea can be a challenge. You definitely need to bring something that doesn’t rely on wi-fi and that can entertain you for a few hours unless you head to the cinema/lounge or find a small TV.

A note on the signs, at least in Orkney they had to add the Twatt sign to a sign containing other locations as the small single name one kept getting stolen. It wasn’t even just tourists either, even during the winter a new sign would be put up and wouldn’t last much more than a week.

  6. Been to Twatt Shetland on the worse ferry crossing I’ve ever had.

Literally leaving the floor, had to lay down.

  7. I’ve been to the Shetland Twatt but not the Orkney Twatt. My great aunt was born in Twatt.

  8. I know we’re used to rain, but thats gonna be a bit too wet…

  9. 8 hours between twatts, sound like every other day at the office.

  10. Not yet, hope to move there and do that journey soon though.

  11. I’ve seen some twatt to twatt on the internet but have never had the pleasure of doing it myself.

“Okay son, I’ll let myself out now”

  12. Yes actually, but I live in Shetland so it’s not unusual.
