And why is he bringing it up now, 30 years later?..
“I’d spent the day listening to people praising Family, condemning Family, claiming that it had been written to undermine Irish family life, that nothing like this ever happened in Ireland, that it had dragged the country right back down into the dirt only days after Riverdance had made us the sexiest people in the world. Family had been made by the BBC: what would people over in England think of us? The show was praised, the show was condemned. I was praised; I was condemned”
Sums up people’s attitudes nicely i think.
I watched Zone of interest recently. If you put nice flowers in front of what is happening, it’s easier to block things out.
I havn’t really watched this in 30 years, it sort of came and went, is there somewhere I can check out Roddy Doyle adaptations?
I watched it again on youtube a few years ago but looks like only the second episode is still there.
It really captured that time.
Would love to watch it again, was too young to appreciate it at the time.
