***The Telegraph reports:***
Britain may not be fully prepared [to fight a full-scale war](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/01/27/what-would-happen-britain-at-war/) on its own, a general has suggested.
Maj Gen James Martin said [the Army](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/02/03/how-the-british-army-lost-its-way/) was trying to get “back on track” after years of focusing on counter-insurgency, which had left it in “in the process of losing the skills” to mount an all-out campaign.
Decades of fighting insurgents during wars Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan meant [the Army](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/british-army/)’s focus was on those campaigns rather than major conflicts between states, he said.
With the war in Ukraine and the threat of Russia to the rest of Europe, the Army has shifted its focus to readiness for war, and this week thousands of British troops were in western Poland as part of [Nato’s largest military exercise since the Cold War](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/05/17/british-army-battle-zone-ferries-poland-nato-ukraine-russia/).
Nearly 2,400 British troops took part in [Operation Immediate Response](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/05/10/frontline-imaginary-russian-troops-helicopters-drill-nato/), which culminated in a complex river crossing involving more than 1,000 vehicles including Challenger II tanks, in 24 hours.
It was one of several exercises as part of Nato’s [Exercise Steadfast Defender](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/03/14/hms-prince-of-wales-nato-steadfast-defender/), a war game and the largest deployment to Europe in 40 years, involving over 40,000 personnel including 16,000 from the British Army.
Speaking at the end of the operation, near the small town of Drawsko Pomorskie, Maj Gen Martin who leads the Army’s 3rd Division, told The Telegraph: “After 20 years of counter-insurgency campaigning, we were losing this [war-fighting] capability… I think we are now very much moving back on track.”

Why… would they be fighting a war alone?
Britain wont be fighting alone if I can help it.
You mean like any other time in the last couple hundred years?
>Britain may not be fully prepared
We’re not prepared for anything. We never have been and we’re okay. Also we’re never gonna be fighting alone
We are discovering that Europe on the military side is a joke, they don’t want to commit and they pretend to be others to commit to their own continent.
People in this place need to wake up and start realizing that they need to develop their own security.
It is better together than disappearing.
Every country should prepare like they may have to go it alone in the future. That’s how you survive.
Why is this news? The whole point of being in Nato is collective defense and not having to fight any full scale war alone.
It’s stupidity if you ever think any country can be fully prepared for war.
Sorry, why would we be fighting alone? Who would be attacking us and why is it a full scale war? Don’t tell me it’s the French again
Britain: Cuts military repeatedly over decades, both political parties doing so consistently.
Also Britain: Surprised pikachu face that ‘death by a thousand cuts’ has rendered said military incapable of operating without outside help.
Edit: And reading the article, I will say the General makes a salient point that isn’t directly tied to funding. (His point is on the shift in operational emphasis on counter-terrorism ops. vs. fighting a ‘near-peer’ national military conflict over the last ~20 ish years. Obviously your military is going to get good at what it’s doing the majority of the time, and will lose a bit of ‘muscle memory’ for what it’s not doing.)
The general is making an observation, and even says they are quickly closing the gap/ things look promising. The headline however, sensationalizes what he’s actually trying to convey.
Who TF is going to war with Britain? They’re surrounded by allies.
it’s all leading to a war… even the blind can see that.. the articles, the threats, the preparations
History repeats itself
Don’t worry. Portugal and Britain have the oldest alliance in the world, and we’ll make sure to keep our word.
Ofc you’re still pretty much screwed if you’re actually counting on our military forces, but you won’t be alone!
Why would Britain need to fight a full scale war on it’s own. We have nukes so it’s not like were going to be invaded anytime soon.
That’s the whole point of our alliances
France is salivating.
Bad choice of words.
These articles, like all of them recently, are a push by the military to increase spending, not an impending warning of war.
But suggesting we’d have to fight a war alone when the whole push is for increased NATO spending, precisely to _stop_ any war as a collective alliance, seems counter productive.
Literally not even news. It’s a scare mongering piece designed to get panic clicks.
No one is. One learns along the way.
They haven’t been since the early 19th century TBH.
How many proper wars has the UK fought on its own since the Middle Ages? Boer war and Falklands maybe (and happy to be corrected). That’s what allies are for! Total nonsense
Good thing for Britain is they have allies. The West will stand together agaisnt authoritarian belligerent. China, Russia and Iran is only a temporary alliance to disturb stability and peace, they have nothing in common but their own rise.
WW3 is already going on, piece by piece, the plan of the Axe is unfolding. They know they got to fight us one by one. They know they have to divide us from inside.
Britain will not be alone: ISA, France, Australia, Germany, Japan, South Korea and many smaller military will join.
Good thing their defense strategy rests on coordination with an entire continent, alongside the world’s strongest military power.
They don’t need to fight alone, they just need to do their part. That being said, they DO need to be doing more to prepare for the conflict that is almost certainly on the horizon.
Hasn’t this been the case since WW I?
I mean, there is no “may” about it.
Battle of Britain 2: Post-Brexit Bugaloo
“Alright lets dust off the old strategy book, is ‘send wave after wave of indians over the top’ still gonna work out for us?” “Uh…lets…see what else is in there.”
of course we are not. look at the state our nhs
Of course, 14 years of Tory governance does that to a country.
Does it take a Journalism degree to formulate those nonsensical headlines? This isn’t even clickbait. it is just stupid.
Now if only there was a union we could have joined for greater stability… maybe one with a selection of other geographically linked countries?
Mom, you’re never going to have to fight a war alone. Okay? We’ll be there for you. You birthed us. It’s the least we can do.
Poland says “We are good for a week or so but if there is ethnic cleansing, our civilians may hop in there to help out.”
They weren’t prepared to fight 13 Colonies alone either.
“I’ll serve crack before my country”
Well, good thing there’s this whole NATO thing so they would never have to find out.
So first Cameron allows Ukraine to attack inside Russia and then someone else speaks out that we couldn’t….???wtf
good thing theyll never have to fight a war alone
Time to flee to the south of Wessex the .
It’s fine, geopolitically they’re firmly wedged up the US’s ass.
The definition of clickbait
Kind of silly considering the USA would turn any country that fucks with Britain into a fucking parking lot. Americans love the British & they would have our full support ❤️🇺🇸
# Britain ‘may not be fully prepared to fight full-scale war alone’Britain ‘may not be fully prepared to fight full-scale war alone’
But are a nuclear power :/
Of course it’s not, manning wise we’re at a between wars (19-38) level.
So they need an opponent?
