I made this map as a part of a series starting with Germany and then moving to the BeNeLux. It’s currently work in progress over on Patreon.
As I am not from Belgium, my French is limited and my Dutch non existent. I had trouble coming up with funny wordplays for the city names. (e.g.: I thought renaming Bruxelles to Bruxils was terribly funny, but that joke probably doesn’t land)
That is where I need your help:
* any fun wordplays for the city names?
* any regions that feel left out? I especially had trouble coming up with ideas for the Flanders-Region as there aren’t a lot of mountains there and it felt a bit empty
* any landmarks I missed?
* any local folklore that could be turned into sth on the map?
I obviously don’t mean to offend anyone. But I’d also like to work with some biases at certain points. E.g.: in Germany I made the Ruhrpott a dry wasteland.
Considering people usually saying ‘Bruxelles ma belle’, you could find another sort of wordplay of your liking.
I’m not too sure what’s happening with Wallonia and Limburg. It feels like emptiness. Where’d you get Mathreine? I suppose Kurk is something about Liège…?
I know historically, Lille (in France) and most of West Hainaut, West Flanders, were renowned places for textiles. Brugge’s port, Leuze apparently was a place with lots of artisans, so were Tournai, Peruwelz, …, and other cities near France. You could put some sort of merchant towns around there.
Mons has its yearly event in which they defeat a dragon.
Charleroi is mostly memed about being an industrial wasteland. If anything, it’d make sense if it were a Dwarven mining settlement in a fantasy map.
Mechelen-Brussels was the first train track in continental Europe. Maybe it’d be fitting to put it here.
Many cities are known for various castles, abbeys, beers, and the like. Could put tiny buildings here and there for Chimay, Hoegaarden, Neufchâteau, …
The very south-eastern end of Belgium (Gaume) is actually plains-ish again, and could probably have a special name about it.
