I remember my dad taking me to Makro for the first time. I just turned 12 and it somehow felt like going to Disneyland. The weekly Carrefour visit with my mom suddenly turned into a barren desert full of boredom.
When I drive past a Makro nowadays I can’t stop thinking: shit man, how can this still be a thing.
Times definitely have changed.
Our family used to go to one every few months until about 10 years ago. The non food section was our playground (especially the cheap DVD’s and the sportswear section were really good price/quality.)
However as other cheaper alternatives became available closer to home we stopped visiting. The last time I went there (a lot of years ago) their prices weren’t competitive anymore compared to our local Colruyt so we didn’t return.
I live close by a Makro and it’s eerie. It’s an absolutely enormous store with a shitload of fresh food, yet often it seems like you’re the only person in the entire store. I like shopping there, but the real reason why nobody goes there is that they’re just too expensive for your everyday shopping needs.
Guess I may need to find a new place for those massive tubes of Vandemoortele samurai.
I remember having to sit in the daycare wondering why I wasn’t allowed to be in there with my parents. I thought it was a mythical place sitting in that daycare. Then when I was older I came to the conclusion that it was this giant boring store.
Noooooo. Where will we buy our massive amounts of TP now? Every time I pass this store the only thing on my mind is to re-stock on TP 😅😅
Edit: serious question: where DO thrifty redditors buy their bulk TP?
Makro was my first job, I felt freat there and wanted to stay. But they had a policy that didn’t easily allow fixed contracts and after 3 years with intermediate periods I was let go for a final time and had to look elsewhere. Quality of my work was good, but they legally could not keep me longer without granting a fixed contract.
But now I’ve grown, and learned so much more about the world. Makro also changed a lot since my departure, ane not in a good way.
