  1. **From The Telegraph’s Europe Editor, James Crisp:**

A European Union offer to find the helicopter, which [crashed killing the Iranian president](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/20/iran-president-ebrahim-raisi-helicopter-crash-latest-news/#1716196877550), was overshadowed by a row after a commissioner tweeted ‘#EUSolidarity’ with Iran.

The EU’s crisis commissioner Janez Lenarcic said the bloc was using its Copernicus emergency satellite mapping service to track down the aircraft, which was carrying [Ebrahim Raisi](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/19/ebrahim-raisi-hardline-iranian-president-helicopter-crash/).

The helicopter crashed on Sunday over mountainous terrain in heavy fog, beginning a large-scale search that lasted more than 12 hours until the [wreckage was found](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/20/will-iran-blame-israel-for-helicopter-crash/) on Monday morning.

“Upon Iranian request for assistance we are activating the EU’s Copernicus rapid response mapping service,” Mr Lenarcic said on X.

But his use of the hashtag “#EUSolidarity” sparked anger among members of the European Parliament and some European leaders.

They said it was a “mockery” of those fighting for human rights under the Tehran regime.

“EU solidarity with evil,” said Geert Wilders, who is on the [cusp of entering government](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/16/dutch-government-set-for-immigration-showdown-with-eu/) in the Netherlands for the first time after sealing a coalition agreement last week.

“I hope Iran will soon become a secular state again, with freedom for the Iranian people and without an oppressive and barbaric Islamic mullah regime,” the hard-Right firebrand said.

  2. Rightly so. Sometimes they act like the most tone-deaf bureaucrats.

We want EU to project strength in defending liberal values, not playing nice with every dictator!

The right tweets here would be about solidarity with the victims of the Iranian regime!

  3. Activating the mapping service is fine, the tweet is entirely imbecilic.

  4. Simply keeping quiet would have sufficed. This phony ‘heartfelt’ idiocy is just further eroding public opinion of the EU and it’s officials.

  5. On a kinda similar note, I got banned from r/de for writing “rip bozo” under the news of the helicopter crash. Some mfs have no spine.

  6. rightly so. Why the fuck EU sympathises with oppressive authoritarian regime which is behind attacks on EU members? It’s like if Allies issued condolences for o nazis after Hitler killed himself

  7. I really hope this was just some intern who was left unsupervised when writing this stupid hashtag. This kind of incompetence is what makes right wing parties acceptable choice for some people.

  8. I mean, I’m okay with the EU throwing fireworks in solidarity with the Iranian people.

  9. Like wtf are they doing? You have to take a stance and stick to it, which obviously doesn’t mean showing disdain but also shouldn’t include actively showing sympathy.

    “Poor dictator!!!111”

  10. ….Obviously. There is absolutely no solidary needed here. Focus on important things please thank you

  11. People might think I’m overreacting but this is so illustrative of the EU. Always moralising, never projecting power. In this world, this is a losing strategy

  12. Meanwhile fireworks in Tehran over his death. Why is Europe crying over death of a guy who killed 30k?

  13. we dont have to play nice with everybody. Time to take a stand and callout evil

  14. Did it get the same criticism when EU openly sided with Israel?

  15. I hate it sometimes. Like bro, where is EU all this time against that regime against basic human rights?

  16. This just makes Europe weak.

We love dictators that are against us and it enables others to think that we are scared of them.

Europe is weak and needs to get his shit together, this leftist idea how you do not desire the death of anyone and anyone needs to be appreciated as human beings are bringing the discussion to a level of gigantic Idiocracy.

He was against human rights, he was a president of a religious dictatorship and we sent solidarity?

Ashamed that these people are expressing that.

  17. People here don’t understand international diplomacy. There’s a 0.0000000000000000001% chance that this makes the Iranian regime fall over that’s why the EU does this. It’s absolutely not because they’re spineless fawning fools.

  18. Didnt seem to mind when EU was sucking saudi/azeri cock

  19. I don’t get this, considering we are basically at war indirectly with Iran. Iran directly supplies Russia in the war against Ukraine. We supply and support Ukraine. Iran is killing many Europeans daily.

I agree with another poster in this thread who said this would be like sending condolences to Germany after Hitler died.

    Iran is our enemy.
