burning cars looted supermarkets clashes with police and roundabouts blocked by masked riers these were the scenes of new caledonia’s largest city numia Monday night the unrest was sparked by a constitutional reform being debated in the National Assembly 177,000 km away in Paris which aims to expand the electorate in the new Caledonian territory the Pacific Islands electoral lists have been frozen since 1998 following France’s numia Accord which aimed to give more political power to the Island’s then 300,000 inhabitants but as a result of the agreement those who arrived from Mainland France or elsewhere in the past 25 years have not been able to vote in local elections thousands of pro-independence indigenous kanaks protested against the bill fearing that expanding voter lists would dilute their political influence they make up 41% of the archipelago uh if the unfreezing of the Electoral roles happens it will quench the struggle of the kanak people just last month the loyalist Camp also took to the streets in support of expanding voter lists which they say would give the 40,000 who arrived post 1998 the Democratic right to vote we’re all here for the unfreezing of the Electoral roles everyone has to be able to vote we are above all French the night of violent clashes left 30 police officers injured and dozens arrested prompting the new Caledonian High commission to ban public Gatherings and schools in the International Airport have shut until further notice

    New Caledonia has a rich natural resource base, including:

    Nickel: New Caledonia is a major source of nickel, containing roughly 10% of the world’s known nickel supply. The islands contain about 7,100,000 tonnes of nickel, making it the world’s fifth largest producer.

    Chrome: New Caledonia is also a significant producer of chrome, with annual production of around 100,000 tonnes.

    Iron: The territory has significant iron ore deposits, with annual production of around 1 million tonnes.

    Cobalt: New Caledonia is a major producer of cobalt, with annual production of around 10,000 tonnes.

    Manganese: The territory has significant manganese deposits, with annual production of around 100,000 tonnes.

The earth does not belong to the first comers but to humanity; several peoples must live there together in respect and harmony: when the suzerain country leaves there is often bankruptcy and chaos which arrive as in Haiti, Zimbabwe, Djibouti etc…France does not treat the Canaques like the Russians treat the Chechens or the Chinese with the Uighurs and Tibetans!
